It depends on many different things. Is the dog in good health, are there activities for the dog to do to get exercise, is it normally a playful dog? If a dog has nothing to do, it will lay around and sleep, especially an older one. I would think for an older dog the average amount of sleep per day would be 10-15 hours a day.

Well he could sleep about 9 hours a day but usually they would sleep about 6 or 7 but some dogs that are older like to lay around the house or yard.

I think most dogs sleep 18 hours a day. It is in their make-up to conserve energy, so sleeping does that.
