It seems that all these religious people on this site answer all the questions with quotes from thier ancient religious books. What about using your brain?

OK. I admit this question was worded intentionally to provoke answers and some of them even show reasoning :) but why do you all believe the books you believe in?

No, it's not possible! That might seem a bit extreme, it is no put down.

But we are talking about Fundamentalist's often, when we talk about these religions.

Consider being taught from birth that you must turn to you're ancient books for all you're answers, cause they are the absolute word of God, or Allah, whoever. And of course these books are absolutely true, is what they are taught.

And all this is strictly reinforced, at a time when you are way to young to think for yourself. You are still totally dependent on you're parents.

A Fundamentalist has to be deprogrammed by an expert. It is not to be attempted by anyone else!

It is dangerous for someone not trained to do this, either to the person receiving it, or dishing it out, it can be!

Some people have based they're whole life on these beliefs. So ya can't just go around telling em' otherwise.

Won't get anywhere. That's my opinion, anyway. But there is a book, "What to say to a Fundamentalist"

Yes, quite so, I do it all the time. Just read some of my answers! :-D

Good luck and peace be with you.

Edit: JewishGirl makes a great point.
Jett says "No one researches religion and then joins a religion" but I am proff that this statement is wrong. I never knew Islam until I came across it in college (nope, never dated a Muslim). Now I am part of Islam.

I believe it is, as I was raised Catholic but grew out of it. I think the best time to teach Christians or Muslims about reality is when they go to college.

I also think that access to the internet will help speed up the elimination of god from our society, as access to knowledge is the best way to debunk supersitious beliefs.

Of course, it may still take a few thousand years, people can be stubborn!

Unfortunately, not in regards to philosophy. The problem is that most almost any religious person will choose a religion based on two things.

1)They grew up with it and were taught it so they just think it is normal.
2)Fear

No one researches religion and then joins a religion, and it takes a strong person to leave it once you are an adult. Around 99% of scientists are not religious, no meer facts will persuade them. Logic is not a strong suit of people who are religious.

They did use their brains, albeit, like a computer. What is stored is what you can only get. First in first out. So let's say, if one denomination get a head start from one guy. Chances are this guy already has information stuck in his brain and a firewall preventing other denomination to intrude.

Is it possible to think for themselves? Yes, only if fuzzy logic is part of his circuitry that allows him to think.

If you had any good since you would no that this is exactly why the world is in the condition it is in today. Adam and Eve listend to the kind of spirit that is set upon you. You do not understand. Do you know that you were created with the whole world just by words.

Dan 12:10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

I myself I'm an atheist but I think that this question is stupid!! For one all of them do not do this nor all the time # 2 I know some people who are atheist & when you ask them why they just quote from philosophy books! Does that mean they also can't think for themselfs? No It just means that sometimes other people or books can express what they are thinking better than they can!!

Yes... it is possible. Many people who have been indoctrinated into myth have gained the ability to think and choose for themselves over time, and usually with a little education and maturity.
