For the same reason the Christians can't read anything (including the Bible) without taking every word as a first account truth. They're even mocking your question for using a metaphor! I am not a Christian. In fact, I'm very much against the biblical movements that form around me and my neighborhoods. However, I agree with your state of mind. You are yourself, you live in this world, this is your life and this is how you believe. It makes you happy, gives you purpose, breeds interest in things and a desire to be social, and it also gives you a sense of morality and honor.
If you are a Christian, you should be happy that Jesus and God and whoever else accepts you and your faith and that you're walking the right path. When you look at me, you shouldn't see that I am pagan, you should that I am Pfil. And I'll give you my bread if you're hungry despite how differently our viewpoints are. These people? They've let a simple book rule their lives. It's not faith out of respect, it's faith out of dependency.

Christians are a war-makers. If they think there might be fairies then they take it upon themselves to 'save' the fairies by forcing jesus onto them. Otherwise, they just burn the fairies alive.
