You CAN have a guarenteed MOS (military occupational specialty) enlisting into the Marines. One of the answers previous to mine said that they will tell you where to go and not the other way around. Depending on the length of schooling, they may force you to enlist for 5 or 6 years rather than 4. I did Signals Intelligence (2621) guaranteed and was able to just do 4 years. I did have friends that were linguists and to get that guaranteed they had to enlist for 6 years. The only counter intel people I knew laterally moved into counter intel after first starting out in the 02xx fields. I'm not sure it you can start a career in counter intel if you havent previously done regular intel work. Dont let your recruiter tell you that you have to go in as an "open contract" or try to convince you that it is a smart idea. You'll have no say over where they place you, could be a cook, could be motor-T, could be a grunt, who knows.

the Marine Corps isnt for everyone. Counter intel well thats a good field but u will find more and more that degrees r required for the better paying jobs even and especially in counter intel. Id say go Navy or Air Force and learn something technical earn your GI bill and go to college after your tour of duty then u can specalize in something like a desired field for counter intel or intel. Like psychology degree or sociology stuff like that. the millitary is ok but dont believe everything ur recruiter tells u believe me as a Jarhead myself. u will go where they send u and just cus something sounds like u wont be in the front lines ..........well that doesnt mean u wont be in danger. Just ask those reservists who joined transport companies thinking no danger. Most of the times they dont have escorts and forget air support. They have to fend for them selves. If u still go and enlist then God be with u and God bless u and be safe. Keep ur head down when u ge tthere and dont be afraid to shoot and definately think abt what u do b 4 u do it.

Well if you want to join the military the Marines is not the service you want (I'm in the Navy)....I worked hand and hand next to many Marines most of them hate it....They are seriously somewhat brainwashed (which is good because we need that to fight in combat). Their advancement is very very hard and slow compaired to the Navy...I made E-5 in 2 years...that is unthinkable in the Marines or Airforce...what this means you will be doing crap jobs and making less money for longer...and think again about the front lines thing...the Marines are going to put you where they need you...you will have no choice once your "in"...nothing is for sure no matter what the recuiter tells you...So if your willing to die for this Iraq cause, join the Army or Marines and you may have a chance before you know it.....If you want to travel and gain technical experience while living decent join the Air force or Navy.

I am a former Marine. I feel it was the best thing I did in my life prior to having my child. The things I learned will last me a lifetime. Anyone can be a soldier. It takes someone special to be a Marine. Good Luck with your decision. Read everything and ask questions. Some recruiters are not truthfull. Do your research but ultimately the decision is yours.

I am the wife of a Marine who had been with him since before he began. The Marines are the hardest. It depends on what you want the Marines for. The Army has much better pay and benifits, but the Marines are more disciplined from what I have seen. The Marines also have shorter tours overseas. Only 8 months and the Army usually go for a year. I think the Marines are fine if you are single, but once family gets involved its much harder on all. But go for Army if you want money.

My husband leaves for iraq in september. I wish he never signed up , because i dont want him to go. Specially since he will leave 2 months after our first son or daughter is born. But on the other hand i am SO very proud of what he does everyday and the sacrafices he is going to make in september for his country. I think anyone with the balls to join since the war has came deserves a pat on the back. Don't let ANY of your family influence your decision to go. They wont be standing beside you throughout training/combat. Make it your decision.
Oh yeah, and for creasy. You were either in the military LONG ago or you have been watching too many full metal jacket movies. You now pick what you want to be when joining. If you can meet the mental and physcial requirments to be what you want then you are what you wanted.

Before you sign on the dotted lines, be sure that you are promised in writing that the Marines will place you in the work you want to be in. Be sure to have it in writing because my knowledge of the military is that military needs comes first, so the recruiters can verbally assure you of something but the needs of the Marines comes first.

I was in intelligence in Saigon in a joint command. It consisted of army, air force, and marines. We all did the same work. I was in the air force and I am sure that my basic training was much easier. For a specialty like that I would check with all the armed forces and see which one is better.

I think its a good idea, hell I did it. I'm going Infantry. I leave for Parris Island sometime in June after I graduate. Don't worry about what other people think of it (trust me you'll get plenty of people calling you crazy if you join), just do what YOU want to. Semper FI

i'd say go for it if it's what you want but, no matter what you enlist for the chances are with all of these global conflicts you'll be fighting wether you want to or not. not trying to scare you or influence your decision.....just letting you know. but, there are a lot of benefits to joining as well just weigh out the pros and cons
