When I introduced a new little male kitten to my 10 year old female (fixed) cat, it took 2 weeks for them to finally settle down. But then they were inseparable.
The female cat finally started socializing with the kitten by grooming him. Which was actually kind of cute, because she would plant her paw on his shoulders so that he couldn't get away, and lick him from one end to the other.
He finally got tired of it by six months (when he was already twice her size), and let her know that he could do his own grooming. But she would always remind him when she thought he was getting too stinky, and then he'd spend about an hour cleaning himself.
Both of those cats are gone now. The male from pleurisy at 15. The female from old age at 22.

If you had just brought the kitten home and let him loose in your house then you didn't take enough time to do proper cat introductions.
Try to imagine how you would feel if your female friend came home with another male friend and without discussion, shoved the guy in front of you and told you that this new friend was here to stay. Now you have some strange person invading your territory and you are suppose to put up with him. Surely you would be a little upset...maybe a lot upset!
As it stands now, you are observing normal cat behavior. If you can stand the hissing, allow them time to get to know each other. It actually sounds like your 4 year old is a very well socialized lady, kuddos for bringing her up right :), and the kitten is just a bit frightened right now. If there are no claws being used, or fur flying, then your patience is all that is needed. They will be buds in no time.

yes they will get along. they just have to get used to each other. As for how long. Each cat differs. With a female and male it takes a little longer. Because male are territorial.

they will get to know each other and allow for each other's presence, with the occasional spat (i had three cats in the same house once and they each adopted a room and a spot on my bed) and only once in a while had a wild fight, with each retreating into their own individual spaces for a short period (sometimes a day or two). it is just the way of cats.

they might always be like this, it all depends on if the cats like each other and they can get along. i would keep trying though, the more they spend time together, the less they might hiss at each other.
