shih-tzu , basset hounds, corgis and dachshunds
are all prone to back problems ..
( they all have long bodies and short legs )

It is an in-bred trait , and sadly,
many suffer from disc injuries , at some time .

Some of the larger dogs like GSD (Alsatians) also have problems with hip displacia .

However, most of the above breeds, do live normal, active, carefree lives.

Always buy your pedegree puppies, from a reputable breeder .

Actually since their is so much cross breeding with different breeds, many small dogs are prone to back problems. Daschhounds have notorious back problems.

My Jack Russell/Shitzu has a longer body for a dog his size and is not overweight. He likes a good rub on his spine and frequently does "downward dog" leaning up on couches to stretch his torso.

I have a small Toy Yorkshire Terrier whom has had back problem's. My vet told me it's very common in small dogs as they are so lively and a settee is a big height to jump and can put a lot of strain on they backs. He is on Metacam for life which has helped alot for pain. He seems very happy but he has to stay on the floor so not to jump from heights,

most smaller dogs dont get back problems unless there overweight,or they get injured somehow.but some are prone to back problems,my mini dockson has some back problems cauz there is no support for her middle, these dogs are the ones that get it the worst.jumping up on the couch could pull there back or even break or frature it.if you have a small dog and are worried about back problems, take him/her to the vet and get a checkup, and ask your vet if the type of dog you have is prone to back injuries & if so how can you avoid them.

What else do you want to know?
Yes small dogs have back problems partly genetics and partly from the way we pick them up.
The way to alleviate their back problems generally you take them to the vet or get doggie aspirin.
