That would depend on your hair type. And what type of style you're trying to create. If you have mixed hair like me. Which is thick, dry and wavy. I personally like the plastic ones. I buy them at any ethnic beauty supply store. To get my hair dried using the hard hat dryer. When my hair is dry, I unravel each roller, and re-roll back into its shape and use bobby pins to keep it in its place. Or if my hair is dry, I use a 1 1/2 or 2 inch curling iron a little hairspray at the tips, part my hair in sections and roll each section in the form of a roller and use bobby pins to keep them in place. I do this before I go to bed and wrap a scarf. When I wake up, just take out the pins, shake your hair a little, style and you're out the door.

I like the white foam ones with a small wire in them (Goody's) if I am wanting a spiraled look. Conair hot rollers if I am wanting bouncy curls.
