as you probably know, cutting fresh onions brings tears to one's eyes. Does that improve the eye sight? or is it bad for the eyes?

It's my thought that the tears caused by cutting onions helps cleanse the eye. But it has nothing to do with eye sight. I never noticed any irritation, swelling or redness in my eye later in the evening but if you do, maybe that would show irritation and would mean yes, onions are in fact bad for the eyes.

Onions Good For Eyes

I don't think it has any effect at all on eyesight, butthe tears do wash the eye, so if there's an impurity there, it would be washed out. Bathing the eye in water would do the same thing theoretically.

As far as I'm concerned though, tearing up from onion-cutting has one interesting effect: I have hay fever and, in season, I can be an itchy, sneezy mess. Once I was mincing onions during a particularly itchy time and my eyes tared up and stung like mad for a few seconds. But after that, my eyes stopped their itching completely - like magic! Since then, I've noticed that slicing onions reliably stops eye itching - for me anyway.

The fumes that get released when you cut onions act as an irritant to your eyes, so I can't imagine it's GOOD for them.

At the same time, unless your job is to cut onions 12 hours a day, I can't see (no pun intended) how the occasional cutting would hurt them.

As a tip, if you want to minimize the problem, cut under running water.

The only thing for some people is that is irritates the eyes and makes them tear. Best then to cut onions then under water in a bowl.

Cutting onions is not bad for your eyes.....There are a few tips for keeping the onion from making you cry. Try holding the onion under running cold water for a min, this will not hurt the onion and will keep the fumes and juices to a minimum when cutting. The main thing is to always use a SHARP knife to cut onions! The sharper the knife the quicker the job, and the juices are kept to a minimum! Just PLEASE don't cut yourself....

Since it causes tears, to me, it would be bad. Make sure your onion is cold but not frozen before you cut it.

Interesting thing I also learned. If you rub your hands on your faucet after cutting onions, it actually cleans your faucet.

it does not do anything to help the eyes, how ever you can avoid the tears if you keep the onion in the frig for a couple hours before you peel and slice it.

It will not hurt you, other then the tears, I promise you (don't have an allergy do you? I would be lying then!)
Try breathing through your mouth when cutting them, we tend to breath through our noses lots and this draws the fumes straight up to the eye area.
