I'm in love with a guy who went to an English school until age 12. He has a non-English girlfriend now. If I sent him a secret text in French (so that the g.f will not understand it) do you think he will understand it? Would he have learnt French at school?

Some do, some don't (in our school one half of the year group learnt French, the other German, plus some other schools offer Spanish), but none really pay any attention in languages classes (generally speaking). He probably won't understand more than 'je voudrais un bier' if he even remembers anything at all (which is unlikely). If I were you, I'd leave him alone but if you're really determined to tell him, I'd just tell him in English. Besides, even if this girl's not English, it doesn't mean she can't speak French.

Kids in the UK are taught a foreign language on entry into Secondary education, which is about age 11-12 years old. French is the one most pupils will be taught, the more promising pupils may be taught German, Latin or whatever. But how do you know the girlfriend didn't have the French language taught as a part of her curriculum?

I found a great deal at a second hand store on French dictionaries and grammars. I would love to receive secret texts from a bad French girl. But, I have no idea about your quesion to tell the truth. Hmm... and, what if his girlfriend does speak French?

Here we don't as a rule learn foreign languages in primary school, so it depends where he went after age 12 and what he learned there. It's possible he only did a couple of years and has forgotten what he learned.

But if he has a girlfriend...leave well alone. Not nice, and if he likes you now, knowing that you'd quite happily try to stir things between him and his gf could well and truly put him off you. Bitter experience talking here...

If he has a girlfriend, you should probably leave him alone. A former roommate of mine broke up with her boyfriend because he kept texts a former gf of his kept sending him.

You had your chance. Besides, irregardless of whether or not he understands French, he may just delete your text without bothering to reply or to even read it.

Yesh they do, I know what kind of schoo you're talking about, my boyfriend went to that kind of school before his family moved to Canada, and they taught him French, so if his school was anything like my Bf's then yea he should.....

I think you could text it, then put an internet site on it, where he can translate it.
But before you do, think how you would feel if you were the gf!

It will have to be very basic. The quality of language teaching is not good - unfortunately.
