Actually a lot of the surah's DO promote violence, I've read it.
Now here are the things that happen when people read this:

1) Its a scripture written around 1400 years ago, cant take it too literal.
2) The majority of people take the peaceful approach and dont try slain or slander or humiliate nonmuslims however still following Islam
3) The most dangerous kind that DO believe to the letter the Koran and( in some instances the sunnah ) and TRULY BELIEVE IS THEIR DUTY AS MUSLIMS TO EITHER CONVERT PEOPLE TO ISLAM OR KILL THEM. And dont tolerate anyone who doesnt share this.

Trust me I've had run-ins w/ people like that, unfortunately. And fortunately I've also met muslims that were wonderful human beings.
Plus it doesnt help what they show in the media about muslims, like for example:

a) the whole cartoon thing, the hypocrisi of that is that muslims can get away with ridiculing christianity, judaism etc, etc.

b) the killings of theo van gogh and others who dare criticize Islam publicly.

c) the constant humiliation and scare tactics that are imposed in muslim countries to non muslims communities. Example: the christian and now extinct jewish communities of lebanon, iran and egypt and terrorizing of kurds in iraq, the slaying of armenians in turkey etc, etc.

d) the forced convertions of journalists, some of whom naively think they can help muslims by reporting the truth.(remember that one girl from the christian science monitor and the other two journalists, cant remember what country though were forced to convert)

e) the honor killings(check out the bbc, many cases in britain and europe)

f) the harsh laws in regards to apostacy (leaving islam, in short you leave it,you die).remember that guy in afghanistan who is a christian his family disowned him and deemed him insane, his guards used his bible as toilet paper and was almost killed, what saved him was international pressure on afghnistan.

g) That under shariah laws nonmuslims are called dhimmis or dhimma (loosely translated as the party of satan, applied to jews and christians) in medieval islam the dhimmis payed a special tax along w/ the tax , they received a slap in the back of the head as a sign of humiliation.

So you see, they are not all false after all.

However if you truly want to make a difference why dont you do
an ANTI BIGOTRY campaign to eradicate muslim prejudice towards nonmuslims.

Because I watched a video where a group of masked individuals beheaded a captive prisoner and then in Arabic chanting "glory to God", and I did not hear about widespread condemnation from the Muslims. True, each religion has its extremists who might violate the true commands of the religion, but if the Quran, and consequently the Muslims, advocate peace and love, then they should do more to show that they are enemies of those who use Islam to spread domination, destruction, and death. If more Muslims rejected their extremists, I would have much more fondness for Islam.

I would say that because of the Islamic terrorists. That's probably why...oh and because of what Muhammad says also. Not just in the Quran but also in the Hadith. He isn't quite the prophet many make him out to be. He was violent, very...very violent. Perhaps this is why most people think the Quran promotes violence and hate.

Just perhaps...

There are, like all religions, good and bad people. Unfortunately, violence has been justified by groups that proclaim to represent the religion. Recently, in Pakistan, a church was blown up as an anti-christian act. Unfortunately, the Muslim community hasn't been vocal enough in condemning such acts. Or if there has been condemnation, it has not been reported.

They believe that the koran promotes violence and hate, because they have read it.

The koran demands that muslims extract a tax from non believers. It demands that they kill the infidel.

Read it yourself, Dearie. Or if you are too lazy too, just click the following link, and read some of the quotes from the koran:

May you come to know the Lord Jesus, and have a peaceful eternity.

edited to add: Christianity is based on the first four books of the New Testament, which are referred to as the gospels. These books contain the teachings of Jesus the Christ. None of his teachings promotes violence. In fact, he teaches against it.

The other books in the bible are significant to Christians for various reasons, so they are included in the canon. However, Christianity itself is based solely on the teachings of Jesus. We are not under the laws of Moses, so we are not commanded to violence.

Oh I don't know. It might have something to do with all the murders done in the name of Allah. Oh how about the fact that Muhammad is a false prophet who lied, killed and married a young girl? No, maybe it's because there have been Muslims on this site who have said those who do not follow Muhammad should die. No wait, how about because I have read as much of it that I could stomach and threw up after all the disgusting distortions and lies I came across.

Ignorance is the reason... They believe what they see... The biased news channels, some wrong muslims who claim to be holy warriors and say it is commanded by Allah (swt), Verses from the Qur'an taken out of context... Before one debates upon verses from the Qur'an, please keep in mind the time, the reason it was revealed and the circumstances at the times. One who says that the Qur'an commands to kill the infidels, why dont you read the whole chapter and understand that at the time when muslims were merely delivering the word of Allah (swt) (Not forcibly, mind you... just informing everyone), they were met with violent resistance... a lot of torture... wars etc... it was then that you were required to kill... just as in any war... Killing the innocent... men, women and children just for fun or to get your selfish words across is condemned in the Qur'an... Hate towards other religions is also not allowed... Please Don't quote verses out of context... There is a reason and story behind everything... So, until the misconception exists, it's our duty as muslims to explain and keep explaining the truth... it's upto them to accept or reject.. and Allah(swt) to guide them...

Peace!
