Discipline and patience are the only way. Initially you just have to resist the cravings. To do this, you really have to WANT to cut back. If you really are motivated, you can do it.

When you feel like eating something sweet, find an alternative like drinking a glass of water or eating an apple. The less you eat of refined sugars, the less you will crave them. Also, the more you create good habits like reaching for a healthy snack, the easier that will become and the easier it will be to resist.

I have cut back on refined sugar and white flour this year. Combined with some light exercise and sticking to reasonable portions, I've lost 17 lbs since February and I'm continuing in that direction. I still like desserts but I'm training myself pretty successfully to eat one helping of dinner and one dessert (occasionally, not with every meal). I have also had to work hard at not reaching for a candy bar when I get stressed or busy. Now, i just get a glass of water or chew a stick of gum.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I read an article once that most cravings go away within 5 minutes, find a way to keep you busy. Also keeping busy with things like around your neighborhood, Yahoo! has plenty of fun useful things, school, if you want to work hard to get a degree, reading or music can really help and make life seem more fun and exciting! Sometimes your body craves food just for the water, get a drink of water or juice and see if that helps.

Substitute. Instead of those kind of sweets, try fruit. Fruit is naturally sweet and good for you. Also, something sweet and might be healthier than chocolate, cakes and cookies are caramel apples, and banana pops. But, you gotta eat those in moderation too. However, just try your best to stay away from them and limit yourself to one a week. It's a much healthier lifestyle.

I had the same problem until I went on my diet. I stopped cold turkey. If I wanted something sweet, I had a protein bar. They had some chocolate on them and a wee bit of sugar, but better than eating a real chocolate bar that is loaded with sugar.

Keep busy and get a good Multi vitamin. Excessive sweet cravings are usually due to boredom and imbalanced diet. If your eating right you should crave less sweets a high fat low fiber (like fast food and processed foods) has been proven to increase cravings for sweets. Improve your diet, get a good multi and find a hobby like arts and crafts, a neighborhood walking group, tennis - whatever to keep your energy up and alleviate your boredom. Good Luck!

This sounds odd, but I do remember hearing that a dill pickle is a good substiute for sweets. If possible, keep them out of the house....Good Luck
