My stepdad had a whole lot of movies on VHS and he wants to convert them to DVD. What device can I purchase him that will do this? Do those DVD recorder/VCR combos do this? Which brand, and where can I purchase it? I want to purchase this as a christmas gift. Thanks!

I've purchased this unit, and it works great for just that.

Just keep in mind that your DVDs will only look as good as the tapes. But the unit works great.

I've placed a link to the exact model I have that works for sure. On the webpage, there are places where you can buy it online and it will arrive in time for the holidays.

Going through a computer is much more time consuming than just popping in a VCR and DVD tape and hitting record.

Plus you can also use it to record your TV shows on DVD. Pretty cool little unit.

There are media converters that take an analog signal from a VCR and convert it to digital for your computer. A digital video camera can also be used as a converter.
Then, you have to edit the movie in software such as iMovie on a mac and burn a DVD.
Very time consuming.

You need software and a dvd burner. Play your tapes thru your vcr, which you plug into the pc, then the software will copy it and burn to the dvd. Very simple
