The spreading of what an individual perceives as enlightenment is the same powerful instinct whether one believes one is motivated by a genuine higher power or a genuine higher truth. If one is an atheist, one believes in the non-existence of any god. This is a higher "truth" to atheists than any "truth" of god's existence. Therefore one prosetylises that truth in the hope of reducing the darkness and ignorance in the world and establishing one's truth in more minds and hearts.

The gospels pronounced to unfold the sturdy information. there replaced into no internet or CNN returned then, so somebody had to get the observe out approximately what got here approximately. the super value, replaced into it have been. i think of maximum folk understand the story now. speaking approximately faith and non secular ideals is fantastic-- if all and sundry is open to that. yet no one needs their evaluations to no longer be taken severe, on any subject remember. So the "super value" at the instant can't be proselytizing like it replaced into. you recognize this already, and understand that human beings asserting i choose to save your soul does not "artwork." It must be approximately touch, discovery, and a real substitute of techniques, all undertaken in sturdy will. it quite is a 2-way highway. i'm unsure why human beings have not come to understand that.

Probably one of the most unbiased, respectful atheists I have met on this forum is J. P. His answers are very thoughtfully and intelligently expressed and he also seems willing to listen even if he doesn't agree. In direct answer to your question, I think some people, like him, wish to genuinely SHARE the knowledge they have, and want to give Christians a different point of view without the hatred. Others seem to have a grudge against God, or Christians in general, and the sarcasm is more evident, but it's an open forum, and debate of all sorts is to be expected.

hiya, that's a perfectly reasonable question.
The reason why is because we believe that you're deluded and unhappy. I am an ex-christain (you can read my "testimony" here, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlEiNrsSbcARon_4bV_sd7Xsy6IX?qid=20061202103358AA1cnow&show=7#profile-info-bff29694984ea421519577a949eb0b6baa if ya want) So I care about people who are going through an experience similiar to what I went through.
In addition, in my country, the USA, the religious right is trying to stop science education and the seperation of chruch and state and it's important that we keep these things.
I hope that helps.

Why do you think it's converting at all?
And no, we're trying to make you THINK instead of live your lives in terror of what MIGHT be.
It's a sad life thats lived preparing for death. That's no life at all.
And here's a thought.. when Christianity stops trying to force everyone else to live by THEIR ideals, then everyone else will stop fighting. But Christians can't do that because your bible says so.
So, I guess we keep fighting until you learn to Keep Thine Own Religion to Thineself.

I know it may surprise you, but many people find self-motivation to be the main ingredient for doing something... not because someone or something else told them to.
How is my answer incorrect? I'm simply pointing out that some folks don't need some higher power to tell them what to do. They do it because they want to. They are self-motivated. You asked why -- there's your answer.

It is not true that all religions prozelytize, only the Christians and Muslims do that. And I am an atheist and don't try to "convert" anyone.

Ooooooh you mean you wouldn't do ANYTHING unless a supreme being tells you to? Personally I find that I do things for my own reasons rather than doing things because other people want me to. I suppose that's insufficient motivation to you...
I am always gaining knowledge and always educating myself when I discuss my metaphysical stance. The "point" is that I'd like for people to understand the "other side" and of course never like ignorance and misconceptions to run rampant.

Good question.
I think it's kind of the same reason that one kid who smokes tries to get other kids to smoke. It's more fun for athiests and agnostics if they have other misguided tools to play with.
