This woman was standing inside the lobby of my building right by the entrance. I was holding my baby and trying to open the door with the key. But the woman just stood there watching me! I'm just trying to figure out why she didn't open the door until I said loudly "She can see I'm trying to get in but she won't even open the door".

You could I suppose put it down to some sort of retard behavior, on the other hand it could be a fear on the part of the woman that an intruder was trying to get in.
We have a similar locking system in or block, nutters frequently ring all the entrance buzzers and announce "I've forgotten my key" they are usually let in by another flat owner, without really knowing who they are allowing into the building, not a good move at all!
And that 'retard' could have been my Mum (shes not been very well lately)!
But you've got a bit of weight off your shoulders now, which is a good thing and no real harm done, but there are two sides to every story aren't there?

Well, first of all that person's behavior was an insult to people who are mentally challenged. Chances are if she truly was retarded, she would have helped you open the dorr,

Second, I'd say you encountered a self centered, self absorbed person who didn't even realize (I know it was obvious) that you needed a hand. You'd be amazed how many people are out there wandering around who have no idea what is going on around them.

Some people are either spaced out or else not raised right.

I'm sure YOU would help out if you saw someone struggling, right?

You didn't say what state you are from, some people would freak out if a stranger tried to approach them, especially in a large city. Maybe she was afraid to get involved, thought you would freak out and screech, "STAY AWAY FROM MY BABY!" or something.

OK this might be picky, but I can think of better words than "retarded" to explain this woman's behavior. My mentally challenged friends would hurry to help you with the door and the baby and any other way they could. next time, be PC and use...
lazy, stupid, pathetic, apathetic, selfish, bone idle????

Did she know you belonged there? Next time, just ask her to open the door. I don't think she could read your mind.

Try asking for help next time instead of expecting someone to bow down and acknowledge you. People aren't mind readers.

Its called mental retardation. That is when the person's mind has not fully developed to those who are "average". It is common among America. Most are born with mental retardation. NO this does not include those kind of people who say "your mom" and/or "fo shizzle". those people just need to get out of their grandma's basement.

Um... while it would have been most polite for her to assist you when she saw you, why didn't you ASK FOR HELP instead of getting so frustrated at the lack of it that you ended up saying something rude. Miss Manners would say that someone else's rude behavior doesn't justify doing it in return.

First off not everyone can read minds. Second, she wanted to watch you struggle. Thirdly, some people don't like help, last time I tried to help someone they yelled at me and said "I DON'T NEED ANY HELP!!!" so instead of helping them they just watch and don't go out of their way unless someone else goes out of their way to ask for help.

They're just insentitive. Maybe when the same thing happens to her she will improve her outlook. But I, like you, still ask myself why she can't seem to want to help, or is too stupid to realize that she should.

I, by the way, once deliberately dropped some non-fragile stuff on the ground in a very similar situation to the one you're describing, and when the guy asked if I wanted some help said: "kinda too late - I could have used it before but I guess you're just selfish and are now trying to redeem yourself - but it won't work - I know that you are an asshole so it's pointless to cover it up." I guarantee that by destroying his character I felt better than any help he could have given me would have provided.
