I knew two families who would compete with each other every year at Christmas. Their rivalries included everything from how much they decorated their homes and yards to how much money they spent on gifts for others. Eventually, things got way out of hand. Their yards ended up with so many lights and decorations that they became eyesores. They also wasted so much cash on whatever the "hot items" were on a given year, they didn't have money left for emergencies. One of them had a car break down on that one given year and actually had to borrow money from their daughter to get it fixed- that's how bad it was! Things were considerably toned down in the holiday seasons that followed, but who knows where else their rivalries lie nowadays.

I did that once... for smack. Sometimes I wouldn't eat for a couple days because I needed my stuff. It got to the point where I knew I was messing my life up, so I stopped using it as much and started substituting lesser substances. It took moving out of town and breaking ties with some friends before I actually got off the powder entirely. I currently take the occasional Methadone or Oxycontin when I feel that urge, but I no longer need the powder like I used to.

Someone I know is like this. This couple had their house renovated and designed by a professional, buy stuffs and a car all on credit. Eventually they owed 10 banks about $150K.

Yep, my aunt. She purchased a house knowing she couldn't afford it. Bought new doors because her neighbors had new ones installed, and then the next day filed for bankruptcy.

Yes. It's sad, because my friends, who are in their 50's, have not yet figured out that things don't bring you happiness. They often have the opposite effect - they end up owning you.
