I've noticed fundamentalist and evangelical churches are using statues in their Nativity scenes and during different celebrations. Based on the all too common accusations against Catholics by the same groups isn't this also idolatry by there mere possession and existence?

Well John D. you seem to be missing one thing, no Christian church claims Dec 25 to be the actual birthday of Jesus. But the real question is John D. why wouldn't you want to have a celebration for the coming of Messiah?

royal neither do Catholic and yet Catholics get blamed for idolatry. I think the bible text is very much interpreted. there is no understanding of what makes something graven and what qualifies as genile worship. In fact there is much Old Testament scripture in which God instructs the true believer to construct images and statues to his glory.

Statues do not necessarily translates to idolatry. Unless one bows down to them and worship them, they are just works of art.

I never thought of it as idolatry, but simply uninformed stupidity since the Bible does not tell us the date Jesus was born nor instruct us anywhere to celebrate His birth. It is a manmade holiday based on ancient pagan festivals that have absolutely nothing to do with the birth of Christ.

No. Statues of angels and saints, metals and pictures. We Catholics and brother Protestants use these as an expression of our praise to our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a visual prayer. When one thinks that those items have magical powers, that becomes superstition and would be wrong. Likewise, body gestures such as kneeling before statues should not be use to adore the statues but rather as an aid to meditate on our prayers to our Lord. likewise the words in the bible are not magic, but they will inspire us to become closer to our Lord.

Of course not............they don't worship the Nativity scene. It just causes them to reflect back to the time when Jesus was born and then died for all of us and arose and ascended to the right hand of God the Father.

Nope. It's just one of the many things in our age that adds beauty to it. Like ferris wheels, football games, strip malls, the circus, concerts, and so many other things.

When I start seeing people praying to a glowing, plastic, baby Jesus, I will worry about your question.

Haha, as opposed to christmas TREES, which have the roots in pagan festivals.
Live n let live. Or watch all the god believers just nitpick each other to death.
