I didn't choose it. It's the default stance when you are without belief in gods. That's what atheism IS - "without belief in the existence of a deity or deities".
Once I realized that gods do not exist, it really wasn't a choice so much as a necessity to be an atheist.
Also, skepticism is the default stance when proof is not provided for a positive assertion. Believers assert "God exists" and so the burden of proof rests squarely upon their shoulders. Until proof of said assertion is provided, non-believers are entirely justified in their non-belief.

I am not an Athiest and I think many so-called Athiest will ask for forgiveness on the day. An old soldier once said he never saw a single Athiest leave the trench to go over the top. I can believe that.

ATHIEST means believe in god, they choose this way of life because they want to be ordered around by sombody who isnt even real, and they dont have their own lives because they're r*tarded.
AMETHIEST means doesn't believe in god, these are the ones with the knowlege to know god is just some tw*t 2006-7 years ago made, although they might believe in jesus but just as a normal person, I dont believe in jesus but their is know evidence.

~~~BM ,,,, Firstly, as I grew older I studied more and more about Comparitive Religion/Philosophy. Organized Religion never was able to pass the simple scrutiny of my young, undeveloped mind. I renounced christianity at age 17, and just left my open to my ability to Understand the Concepts of others. Western Philosophy falls way short as it's concept has god external of man, yet still claims that god created ALL things. Eastern Philosophy contends that God Essence is INHERENT in all things,,,especially Human Beings. I gravitated toward this Concept and studied the Eastern Thought. Then I stumbled onto a professor named Joseph Campbell, who I feel was the best authority on ALL Mythology. Eureka. I finally discovered where all religion was born. Find out for yourself.
Hiya. It's not really a "way of life" but a "belief system." My "way of life" is more boring than most christians, I would bet (except for the odd concert).
I was raised in a christian home. Bible Camp Counsellor, led people to "the lord, on the bible quiz team, etc. I went to a bible college after high school, convinced that the more I studied the word, the better I would know god. I was shocked to the core when I began to lose my faith, primarily due to Hermeneutics Class. We were translating I John from the koine greek. The small "holes" in logic became huge gaping holes in the original language. Crushed, I dug harder, and god fell farther from me. I decided I must be "proud" and was trying to find god with my mind, when it was a matter of faith. So I locked myself in a closet to pray every night. No matter what I did, I just kept losing my faith. IT was a long process of about 3 years.
People have told me I must have had sin in my life. Not true. People have told me I'm lying. That I never "really" believed. Fine, call me that. I'm used to it. But I KNOW how sincere I was - as sincere in my belief in god as I've been about anything.
Why don't I believe now? First I lost the god of the bible. The christian god. Primarily due to many morality issues in the bible (God had the morals of a toddler-tyrant). Then I lost my ability to believe in any gods - because primarily all the "god explainations" just didn't make sense and collapsed around themselves. First Cause, Designer, etc.
Ha, but this is getting too long! Bye!
There is no need to answer this question angrily, it's just a question.
When I was 8 years old sitting in sunday school singing "red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in his sight" I suddenly realized that it was unreasonable to deduce that our god was the right one and the god that people in, say, Africa or India worshipped was wrong. All the pieces of the puzzle just sort of clicked and it was like that day when you realized that Santa wasn't real.
A belief in a god simply does not make any sense.
1) Biblical contradictions.
2) The implausability of many events told by the Bible.
3) The illogical concepts, like eternal paradise or eternal punishment.
4) The unfairness of many of the concepts (a horrible sinner who repents goes to Heaven, but a charitable guy like Bill Gates who's also an atheist will burn forever).
5) The lack of historical evidence for Jesus.
6) The fact that science does a good job of disproving a lot of what's in the Bible, like the 6,000 year old earth theory.
7) The ultimate unanswered question of... why is Christianity right and all the other thousands of religions out there are wrong?
Geez, I get tired of seeing this question but will throw my 2 cents in one last time. Myself I do have my own deep personal belief in God, But I can not 100% proof God Exist to someone, its about Faith, just like an Atheist could not 100% prove that God does not exist, what I do find on both extreme ends of the argument are people saying My way is right and yours is wrong. I think believing in whatever your God is, if that makes you want to be a better person and to improve yourself GREAT, Personally I have seen allot of people who want to shout out to the world that the are Christians, that scare the heck out of me and I have also seen many Atheist who like Christians, try to be the best person they can be and to improve the person they are and I have met Atheist who were better people than some people who so called called themselves Christians. In all due respect to the Bible, look at all the things that came from it, not to kill, not to steal, to show respect, so on and so on and it is the oldest book there is, and largest selling. I am just a firm believer of showing people thru example not nessessarly words if you like to teach them something.
So to all of you I say
God Bless... OR...
Live long and prosper... (Spock)
There isn't any proof that a God actually exists.
The whole Bible story is unbelievable and reads more like a children's fable.
Religions are cults. All churches want are money (which is why they pay no taxes and are extremely wealthy).
I do not believe one chooses to be gay, like religion suggests.
Etc Etc Etc
I believe scientists much more than I believe someone who was brainwashed into believing there is a God.
I think there are just too many bad things happening in the world today, (some of those are done "in the name of god", but that's not the point I'm making here).
The point is this. How can I accept that your God is allowing all these bad things to happen to nice people? God is supposed to be good and true love? how can he turn his back on people andf let them suffer in this way?
Therefore I don't think creation is being controlled by a superior being who is fully goodness - god.
If it is, then he's rubbish at his job.
