Have social scientists done research on this? The Christians like to proseletyze and tell others how to live. Maybe they should just mind their own business, instead of forcing laws and their behavior codes onto others.

Maybe we should all learn to live together. I will forgive your stupid questions and you can live your life and stay away from those people you don't like. Now, isn't that a good solution. My motto: If I don't like the way a person lives, or what they believe, or how nosy they are and I can't deal with it, I just STAY AWAY from them.
And by the way, today, Christians are dealing with more being put upon them and more persecution than any other group in the US.

while it may be human nature to snoop in others' business, some Christians have clearly given themselves permission to take to to a new level.

I don't think that is a specifically "Christian" activity. That seems to be universal to most religious groups, though methods vary.

I am a Christian - and completely agree with you.
The problem however is not confined to Christians: most folk like to make themselves feel superior by criticising others.......you too?

I never thought of People, In Touch, and other celebrity voyeur magazines as particularly Christian.
