because all of religion worships man thinking that man can do something (anything, even a little sinners prayer) to become the children of God. Silly, we all know that children are children because of what the parents did, not what the child does. No one can change the fact that they are children of God by God through Christ, but many of us would like to worship man saying he has to do something to become like God-thereby falling to the trick of the devil again.

No wonder you don't understand. How could anyone understand something that doesn't exist?? Catholics worship no-one but the Lord God Almighty, who founded our Church and no other. That would be idolatry, and if you pick up a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church you will see that idolatry in every form is condemned by the Catholic Church. We do however honor Mary for the unique role she played in salvation history, mother of the Savior, mother of God, channel through whose voluntary cooperation the Savior of the world came into the world. We honor other people for far less. In the USA we have a day set aside to honor our first president. How does his contribution to mankind compare with that of Mary? The Bible says all generations will call her blessed. Do you? Or do you just ignore her? Or worse, attack her?

A complicated answer - you'll have to do more homework. The Early Church was run equally by men and women: check early texts. When Emperor Constantine became a Christian and Christianity the state religion, women were mercilessly pushed out: - of monasteries and the church too and a male hierarchy established like any US corporation!
A deified Mary became a substitute for real women and a real woman who bore Jesus probaly at age 16 or 17, was married to a man older than her, had other children and watched her own eldest son cruelly killed.
One way to follow this through is to look at Italian Art: Mary looks increasingly like a mature woman and Jesus like an Italian Man rather than a strong- featured, heavy-bearded Jew!
Happy researching!

Thank you for posting this question. This question has been raised by non-catholics for so many times. Catholics don't worship Mary and it is a sin to worship Mary. Catholics only worship God. For Roman Catholics, Orthodoxs and Eastern rites Catholics place and honor Mary above all human race because she was chosen as the mother of Jesus who is God. Catholics believe that Mary is sinless for God had prepared her to be the mother of Jesus when she was in her mother's womb. Catholics usually ask Mary for her intercession to Jesus Christ if they want to ask for something to Jesus. Yes, Catholics can pray directly to Jesus, but catholics have done this as an alternative. Just like, for example, if we ask our mother, father, or pastor to pray for us. I hope this answers your question.
God bless

okay I and other Catholics have answered this countless times and to be charitable I will do so once more.
firstly here is a logical question for you, God detests sin, God cannot allow sinfulness into His Holy presence, God and sin are totally incompatible, so how could Jesus the Divine humanity be born into the body of a sinner?
The Blessed Virgin was born without the stain of original sin and this was by the merits of the death and resurrection of Her Divine Son which God who is not resrtrained by time applied to Mary in the womb of Her Mother St. Anne, if this sounds illogical then by the same reasoning it means God cannot do that which He wills to do and is therefore constrained by human.
finally we Catholics do NOT worship Mary but we do love and honor Her as our Mother and the Mother of God.

Jesus is God.
Mary is a creature who chose to cooperate with God's grace in a way that brought salvation to all.
God deserves worship.
Mary deserves the honor and respect due to anyone who is the true mother of our savior, and who always acted as his first, best, and most constant disciple.
Nobody who truly knows God worships Mary.
Everyone, including her divine son Jesus, honors her and calls her Blessed.
If she's good enough for God to honor, than she's certainly good enough for me to honor.
Case closed.

Mary, along with a sweet little baby, was quite a useful way of selling a new religion to women in a society that had for many years valued the more martial aspects of gods.

God is not a user. How can you say that? And how can you say that about Mary? Remember, God is the one who chose Mary. She did not volunteer to be Christ's mother.

Catholics do not worship Mary.
The Blessed Virgin Mary is important to Catholics because the Bible says she is important to God.
+ Mary is the handmaid of the Lord (Luke 1:38), a servant of God just like us.
+ Mary is the first Christian. All other Christians follow her on the road of faith. She is the model for all of us because she actively cooperated with the Will of God by saying "Yes" to God in the plan of salvation.
+ Mary is the model of faith. Mary's faith never wavered throughout Jesus' life, even while watching him die on the cross when most of the Apostles ran away.
+ Mary was (is) full of grace. The angel Gabriel called her, "Full of grace" and said, "The Lord is with you." She was full of grace and the Lord was with her before she said "yes" to the angel's question. Catholics believe the state of grace was with her since her Immaculate Conception. God prepared her for her later role as the mother of Jesus.
+ Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, of God the Son.
+ Mary is a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, a tabernacle. The angel Gabriel says to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow." (Luke 1:35)
+ God praised Mary through His messenger, the angel Gabriel, "Rejoice, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you." If God and his angels praise Mary, shouldn't we?
+ Jesus honored Mary. Jesus kept the Commandments and did not sin. Jesus fulfilled the Commandment to honor both his father and his mother. WWJD? What would Jesus do? Jesus would and did honor Mary, his mother.
+ The Holy Spirit inspired praises of Mary. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women," and "Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled." (Luke 1:41-45)
+ The Scriptures tell of Mary's place with Jesus. Mary gives birth to Jesus, presents him to the shepherds, to the wise men, to God in the Temple. She lived with him for many years in Nazareth, intercedes with Jesus in Cana, suffers with him at the foot of the Cross, and prays to him with the apostles in the Upper Room.
+ Mary was a prophet. "Behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me." (Luke 48-49) As Christians who believe the Bible, we must call Mary "blessed."
+ Mary is our Mother too. While he was on the Cross, Jesus said to his beloved disciple (who represents all Christians), "this is your mother." (John 19:27)
The Blessed Virgin Mary is not a goddess but the blessed daughter of God the Father, mother of God the Son, and dwelling place of God the Holy Spirit.
The Hail Mary prayer simply recites Bible passages (the Word of God) and asks Mary to pray for us:
Hail Mary Full of grace, the Lord is with you. (These are the words the angel Gabriel said to Mary, a Bible quote.)
Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. (This is Mary's cousin Elizabeth's greeting, another bible quote.)
Holy Mary, (The angel Gabriel said she was full of grace and Elizabeth said she was blessed.)
Mother of God, (the Bible says Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, God the Son)
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (A simple request to pray for us.)
Amen.
With love in Christ.
