thinking of asking my friend to get some spirit for me from the duty free shop.
was deciding between a rum or a gin beside the whisky which i had intended to buy. what do you all suggest? and any particular brand?

I would recommend Rum... unless you have a strong liking for anything in particular.
I'm personally a Gin drinker... Gin and Tonics and Martinis...
However, I would think Rum would be more versatile - Rum and Cokes, Mojitos and Daquiris.

Gin:
Tanqueray - Basic Gin
Beefeaters London Dry
Bombay Sapphire - More a strong juniper flavor... definately different than Tanqueray.
Rum:
Bacardi - Basic Rum
Captain Morgan Private Stock

DEFENETILY RUM !!!!
Gin is made from whatever... It's just alcohol made industrialy with no taste or flavor. Then ythey just poor pepper and other stuff inside to make it better.
Rum is made from can sugar. Better one is rum made in French west indies such as Rum Clememt or Neisson which they leave in barrel for years. Many Flavor. U can drink it like a cognac.

You can bin Gin most anywhere.....get a GOOD LOCAL rum from wherever your friend is traveling....maybe a mango flavor or coconut flavor....

These are two completley different liquors and has a unique taste and drunk with other liquids depending on what you like. I would suggest buying a pint of each and getting a drink recipe book to figure out what you will like better.

I would get one of each if possible.
Captain Morgan for rum
Bombay Sapphire for gin

if your friend is coming from the caribbean, then rum from that country is the best choice. taste other cultures.

MYER"S RUM!!!! It is so much better than Puerto Rican rum like Baccardi(yuk). Try it you'll like it!!

barcardi rum,,,,, its great, especially at winter time, as you can mix it in hot drinks, hot sweet drinks etc rum and hot tea is my fav
