My two year old ate one of these last week. When I called the poison control center, the man actually chuckled at my panic. He said the "Do not eat" warning is because it's a choking hazard. It's just sand. He also told me that silica gel calls are his most common type of call. So, I guess in spite of all the warnings, there's no poisonous chemical or anything involved.

They're actually not poisonous. They're a choking hazard. It's basically sterilized sand. It'll just come out the other end the same as it came in, with some moisture absorbed. I wouldn't say it's good for you, but you would really have to eat a lot of it for it to be harmful.

Why would you do that? While you probably wouldn't die from doing that you probably would get mighty sick.
