I want to help society to improve, not just in the present, but for the future. What type of community work, activism, or volunteering do you do? Or what areas do you feel are truly in need of assistance, but have been overlooked? There are so many areas where one could help that it's hard to choose. I plan to make major changes in the future, and I want to use my time wisely. One person can not change the world, but small changes and help, by many people, can make a huge difference. I don't have much money, but I do have a huge heart, lots of time, and a strong desire to help others. I think everyone has an obligation to step out of their comfort zones, and help others. It takes some of us longer to do that for various reasons, but once we WAKE UP, there are no excuses for not reaching out to others, or working on some level to help make a positive change for society. Thanks

Volunteer where your interests are reflected the best. If you feel strongly about animals, volunteer at your local animal shelter. If womens issues are the most important thing to you volunteer at a womens shelter. Or if you want to help children there are homework clubs or toy collecting clubs. Do what interests you the most that way you'll give more of yourself. I volunteer with a womens shelter, and animals they make me feel the best and then I do a better job. Good luck finding your place.

I used to volunteer at a local no-kill shelter doing adoption counseling and running adoption days at petstores. I really enjoyed my work there because I love animals, I'm a people person, and a good organizer.

I still send them money monthly and plan to go back to volunteering when I have more free time. Animal rescues are almost always desperately in need. I'm not currently volunteering only because my son is 16 months old and I don't send him to daycare. I hope he'll come with me!

Whatever you choose it should be something you not only care about but have the appropriate skills, time, and energy to commit to.

But please choose something! Every one of us can make a difference.

RE: improving the future -- I personally believe that community service in and of itself is meant to improve the present. Just teach your children to value community service like you do! That will improve the future. :)

This year I volunteered with the local United Way campaign in my hometown. What I like about helping out with the United Way is that where I live they support about 22 different organizations, many of which I personally support. So by volunteering with the United Way I get to help out a lot of organizations, but don't have to spread myself too thin. I think the key thing about volunteering is to pick something you have a personal interest in. That way you will be more likely to follow through on your committments.

Go to Idealist.org
This Website has thousands of volunteer opportunities in your community and around the world, and a list of organizations that can help you volunteer abroad.
If you like working on line, let me know, our community (people with disabilities) needs a lot of help, as the UN Convention to protect people with disabilities is about to be adopted. Thank you for your initiative!

I am impressed by your inspiration to change. In my community, I enjoy volunteering at any church event that's going on. During the summer, I helped at a Christian summer camp.
Maybe an idea for for you is to come to New Orleans . This place is great, but we are still trying to rebuild. Our city is known for our Catholic roots. There are many organizations out their that you are Christian-based that would love your help. They also have Habitat for Humanity.
If you don't have the time to come down, maybe send letters to the discouraged. Our suicide rate has come up and people really need support.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR KINDNESS.

I visit nursery homes. They are so lonely. It is always rewarding to visit them and bring a smile to their faces. I know that there are also programs for people who live in half way homes and they need to have a friend to help them out once a week. I also like to bake and give it to homeless shelters. There is nothing more rewarding that to reach out and try to change the world for the better one person at a time. You can visit a volunteer center in your city and see what you like to do.

When I was a single parent raising my daughter, I often spent Christmas by myself when she went to her dad's. I started working with the community dinners where they deliver meals to those unable to come to the center to eat. I continued doing it after she grew up. It makes me uncomfortable and feel good at the same time (does that make sense).

I know the elderly and disabled will some day die, but the need will always be there.

That's what I do.

I volunteer through the local library to tutor a girl in math. I'm soon going to go through the adult literacy training program where I will teach an adult to read. I'm volunteering to teach reading for the same reasons you spelled out. By helping one person to read, they in turn will be able to encourage their children.

Best of luck with your volunteerism! :)
