We've had this dog for about 3 years now and today i found him in the barrel and i dont know i believe someone doesnt like us in this neighborhood :' ( .we've got a new dog this past week too but we paid the same attention to him as if the other dog wasnt there. dont dogs have to be trained to do something?

The dog wouldn't have to be trained to jump into the barrel, he may have thought there was something in it he wanted. Dogs also do not have the mental ability to reason out the idea of "suicide". If he is jealous of your new dog, he's more likely to do something destructive to your property, or aggressive to the other dog. As much as humans anthropomorphasize their pets, they are not human, and they do not think in the same way we do. Theirs is a pack mentality and they would never kill themselves, they would remove the menace from their pack.

Dogs don't have the mentality to try to commit suicide. They aren't so good at understanding cause and effect in this way.
It's possible that he was trying to get a drink of water, slipped, fell in, and couldn't get out. It's also possible that a neighbor hurt him, although it would be hard to drown a full grown dog like that, especially if it is a larger breed dog.

No, dogs wouldn't have the mental ability. Can't reason, their thinking isn't capable of wanting to take such action.

Your dogs instinct is for survival ....You need to watch out for them more. Don't leave unattended.
