I'm getting married on January 6th and am having a hard time picking out a song to dance to with my Dad. He doesn't enjoy dancing, so I don't want something too long, and I don't want anything overly sentimental and sappy. The songs listed on the wedding websites are all so saccharine - does anyone have a better idea?

Thanks!

My dad and I danced to Harry Connick Jr's "A wink and a smile."

What's great about that song is that half way through it has an instrumental section -- so we had the DJ invite other mother/son, father/daughter combos onto the dance floor with us. Not only did it pack the floor and get dancing off to a great start, but it allowed me and my dad slip into the background and out of focus.

It's important to remember that you don't have to conform. My father and I always loved the song Brown Eyed Girl (we stop and sing it every time we hear it and dance too if we're not in a crowded place) and we'll dance to that at my wedding. It doesn't have to be slow or sappy if you don't want it to be! The song should represent you and your relationship with your father. If you guys love a specific song or if there's a song that everytime you hear it reminds you of your father or if he hears a song that reminds him of you, use that song! My friend used Creed's With Arm's Wide Open for her song with her dad because every time he heard it, he cried and thought of her.

There are some beautiful songs out there:
Stephen Kirwan's Little Girl is beautiful

and some country singers have recently come out with cute sappy songs as well. What you can do besides searching for father daughter dance songs online is call up your local radio station or the dj for your wedding and ask them their opinions. But I think the best thing to do is find a song that you and your father love and dance to that regardless of what it is.

Don’t know of any that aren’t a little sappy that’s what’s expected at weddings. Try going to fairplaymusicalgifts.com and go to samples and download a Song for The Parents of the Bride It’s a little sappy but Fathers especially love it

My father and I used to sing this song on the radio when I was little. So I played it at my wedding. It was called if I was the king of the world. I'm not suggesting you do. But what I'm saying if you have a special song. Play it. We slowed danced to it. Even know it was an up beat song. It really meant a lot to him that I played it.

It's a Love Without End - Amen by George Strait It's sort of geared toward a son but could be a good choice for a "less sappy" song.

"What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong - the best version is found on a Kenny G CD in which Kenny G provides the instrumentals. My husband and I used it for our first dance but it's such a great song that it can be played for a father/daughter dance too.

I danced with my dad to the Tenessee Waltz...

A friend of mine and her dad danced to Isn't She Lovely?

My other friend and her dad danced to Joy To The World by Three Dog Night, not because of the lyrics but because when she was a little girl they would dance in the living room to that song together...

It can be a fast song if you like...

Save The Last Dance For Me - Michael Buble...upbeat, not sappy. You and Dad could practice ahead of time so you feel comfortable when the big day comes.

HEARTLAND LYRICS

I Loved Her First

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each other's face
So much in love you're alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world
I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one she told me so
And she still means the world to me just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl
Time changes everything life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

I loved her first
I held her first
And a place in my heart
Will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first

How could that beautiful woman with you
Be the same freckle faced kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to
And tucked into bed all those nights
And I knew the first time I saw her with you
It was only a matter of time

I loved her first
I held her first
And a place in my heart
Will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
I loved her first

I wish this song was out when I got married.

My personal choice would be and was Daddy's Little Girl.

"You're the end of the rainbow
My pot of gold
You're Daddy's little girl
To Have and Hold"

Sweet but not syrupy. If I ever get remarried.. it's going to be done again... with my father playing piano and me singing it. Record it, then he and I can both limp around the floor to what has alaways been asong we adore together.
