I would say it depends on how severe an attack you get. I got it last year (I'm in my early 40's) for the first time. I got spots on Sunday, saw my GP on Monday and he gave me a week off work. I was ok after a week and went back to work (I work at the Doctors surgery, so there is no way he would have risked me going back whilst still contagious)! On the other hand, my 15 year old daughter caught it from me 2 weeks later, after a week all her blisters had turned septic and she needed a week of antibiotics to recover. Unfortunately she still has bad scars.
So I would say between one and two weeks. Watch out for sepsis, I first realised when my daughter's body started smelling bad.
Just keep the Calamine lotion flowing!
Hope this helps.

the person is infected approx 3-4 days before the spots appear, and this is when they are infectious to others. once the spots start crusting over she could go back to school as she is no longer infectious. but i think most schools have policies in place and prefer the student to stay out of school until the spots disappear. usually about 10-14 days

up to about 3 weeksd im afraid, depending on the individual and the severity of it. You should wait until the last crop of spots has scabbed up as they are no longer contagious then.

The previous answerer was correct when they said that when they scab over it ceases to be contagious. However, most schools won't let them back until the spots have gone.
