driving ok on freeway,after coming to a stop- car would not

since gears in the trans are mooved by fluid pressre, i would first check the fluid level. if fluid level is ok, have a shop check the shift solenoid to see if it is the cause or have a screen. if these are ok then you will need to get a new trans. try a junkyard that will supply and install the trans so if it is defective they will switch it out for free.

Keep in mind your car turned 17 last july. And spending $1,000 for a used automatic transmission axles and motor mounts now still gives you a 175,000 mile old car with other problems. But of course your car was owned by a little old lady that drove downhill both ways to church and the store and has only 60 thousand miles on it right? If the transmission fluid wipes off gray or black on the dipstick your'e done. Please remember you have to change the radatior because the fin type oil cooler gets clogged up inside the radatior bottom tank.

Start with the cheapest possibility first. Check the transmission fluid level.
