I just asked this question but put in in the wrong catagory. i'm thinking about joining the navy but still read a lot of articles about rape and harrasment. Does it still happen a lot, more or less than in a normal job?

Sexual Harassment still happens in the military, in fact, just as much as any other job, it just receives more publicity because it is the military. Right now, the military has a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment, in which there are severe consequences for it, one of which is a dishonorable discharge, which can completely destroy a person's chances of getting a civilian job for the rest of their life. In Indiana, there are only two businesses that will hire a person with a dishonorable discharge, White Castle and Taco Bell, if that fives you any idea of the severity of a dishonorable discharge.

I reject the statement that there is "A LOT" of sexual harassment.

I was in the Navy for 15 yrs and only witnessed two cases personally: one was a simple case of improper language... and that was SQUASHED with vigor. The other was an assault aboard the USS Kitty Hawk in 1996... investigated and convicted.

Honestly, I'd say that it is LESS than on a normal job. The Military takes a DIM view on harassment... and rape is a crime that carries the DEATH penalty under the UCMJ.

Welcome Aboard and I hope you enjoy the Navy.

Really depends on what field you go into and coming out of.

If it's strongly dominated by one sex, then the chances of harassment go up. The military is very PC though and harassment is usually treated very strictly which has severe repercussions for careerists.

I know a male nurse who gets, what amounts to, sexual assault if he were a woman on the civilian side. Likewise, I have friends in the investment industry who get away with a lot more jokes and behavior that would not be permitted in most Army workplaces (in which males and females are present).

I was in the U.S. Army from 1991-1995. There is no more sexual harrasment in the military than any other job. Yes there is lots of joking around and that sort of thing, but as long as you have a good attitude you should be fine.

as long as you can take a lot of sexually oriented jokes, you'll be fine. it's only slightly worse than any other work environment, mainly because it's predominantly male and we get lonely after awhile.
