I could tell you my favorite variety but it probably wouldn't help. There are two basic types of scotch: Blended and Single Malt. The blendeds generally have a mellower flavor while the Single Malts have the peaty, inky taste that many enjoy.

Of the Single Malts, there are the Highland, Lowland and Islay varieties. The Islays are made on a(n) island(s) off the coast of Scotland and generally are even peatier and smoky than the rest. To me, the Highland and Lowland varieties are almost indistinguishable.

As a general rule you are paying for the amount of time the Scotch spends in a barrel. The longer aging period mellows the Scotch and allows it to take on the flavors of the wood in the barrel (along with mixing with the bourbon that was previously in said barrel).

Once you pick a variety, buy the longest aged bottle you can afford.

Hope that helped.

VERY SLOWLY!!! ha ha Just go to the liquor store and ask the owner or clerk if they are a scotch drinker and have them refer a good on but, don't tell them your price range cause they will suck you dry of your money and hey, if you get it cheaper, you can buy you a nice bottle of whatever you drink and share a few with your bf... makes for a nice evening together! Have a Good One.

I personally like Glen Scott (which is very light), Glenfiddich or Glenmorangie. The longer they are aged, the more they mellow and the higher the price. Go to a good off-license (liquor store) and look at their selection. If you are in doubt you can always ask from the salesperson's advice. If the store is a good one, they salesperson should be knowledgeable and be able to give some excellent advice.

15 or 18 year old single malt is in my opinion the way to go.
The longer the it ages in it's cask(s), the stronger it tastes of it.
A good liquor store should have a variety of excellent labels.
Also, if it isnt distilled in Scotland, it isn't Scotch.

Hope that helps!

go to a liquor store of higher calibre... one that has a cellar is best.. or go to a wine cellar that also sells liquors.

ask the people who work there about scotch.. if they have some.. ask them for their opinion.. then make it your choice after the study. :D

it's fun to do that...

don't forget to get a bottle of nice wine while you're there...

;)

I would personally ask the store manager or owner of the liquor store what they would recommend.
