Welcome to photography!

To start out, realize that photography is an art form just like any other - that means there are many styles and techniques associated with it. Like any beginning artist, you'll probably mimic other artist's styles before settling into your own.

While learning, try to keep your mind open to new design ideas. Don't cramp yourself with composition or exposure rules like "rule of thirds" or "the zone system". In my opinion, these are restrictions on an already restrictive art form. Though it might be more difficult at first, keep your photographs original - this will lead to a more interesting style later on.

Of course, you'll need a camera - get an entry model 'SLR' type camera with available full manual controls and learn how to use it manually. This will give you full artistic control. Good quality film or digital sensors (that's another debate) and good quality lenses take better photographs...get the best you can easily afford.

Just practice practice practice!!!

You might not take the best pictures when you first start off, but if you keep taking pictures you'll get better. You also have to look at the pictures you take and figure out what's wrong with them. You can have other people who are into photography to help. Then learn how to fix the mistakes. And keep taking pictures!

There are plenty of websites you can join that have members who will help you improve.

I would recommend that you put together your own dark room and start working with black and white. Get yourself a good used between the lenses camera (spotomatic is good) and then you can see the results of your efforts at composition and work with it in the dark room the very day you take the shoot. It's your work first to last.

Color work is more sensitive to time and temp in the chemicals, and it is better to have some experience before you invest in that. Letting someone else develop and print your stuff is denying yourself the real work of a photographer.

Well, first go around to places and see people, events, exhibitions, market places, busy traffic, sea shores, movie studios, televisions stations, read books not only on photography but also novels about melodramas, fictions and try picturing in your mind what makes the characters moving etc. In a nut shell see the DETAILS in what you see around. Try picturing in your mind and bring it onto a camera. Last but not the least a good photographer never wastes time on clicking pictures. But spends a lot of time picturising in his mind before clicking onto his camera. All the best.

Take some classes or just start messing around with your camera and take pictures of your friends or other things and you will kind of figure it out on your own......That's what I did and I've been doing photography since i was six...

get yourself a book about photography. Study contrast and composition. Look at tons of pictures. Learn how to tell a well composed picture from one that's very amature.

I would suggest that you get the best digital SLR you can afford, and then I would take a good photography correspondence course. Then, I would practice, practice, practice!
