I am usually very blunt about it. . . "I'm not trying to offend you, but that situation concerns only myself". If they persist I simply tell them its none of their business.

You could just pretend not to hear the question and not answer it... look away for a few seconds, and then make a general comment about the weather... I think that person will get the clue. If he persists with the question, then you know that he's trying to intimidate you. Don't let him do it! Respond "What's it with you?" or "Whatever!!!" and change the subject. If this person still persists, then it's someone you would'nt want to run into next time around.

I would let them know that I'm not really comfortable talking about whatever it is that they asked me, and request they find another person to ask. If i'm not offended by the question, then I tell them that I would need some time to think about what I have to say so I won't offend them in my answer.

Just say " I'm sorry but I really don't feel comfortable answering your question" there is no further need to explain yourself, and if they persist, walk away.

I typically just tell them that I have no basis to answer their question. Or just be flat honest with them and tell them that you don't feel comfortable answering it. It'll be awkward, but *shrugs* beats you having to answer something you didn't want to.

Ashley.

i say something like, 'well, you see, i don't feel comfortable talking about it. is it okay by you if we talked about something else for a change? i don't mean to offend you, but its just i don't like answering these types of questions'

Just tell them that your sorry but you don't feel that it is an appropriate question, it's a personal question, it's none of their business, or you just don't feel that the information is something that they need to know.

My favorite way to respond is saying very nicely, "Why do you want to know?" Then I wait -- they usually fumble around and stutter. Then I don't answer. :) Hope it works for you!
