Every human civilsation and race has religious beliefs since the very beginning.
So if spirituality is such a gimmick as atheists claim then you are attacking evolutionary enhancement as well. Evolution is the survival of the fittest so evolution has come up with religion for mankind as a favorable trait. So why attack it if we evolved to have spiritual hunger as a benefit?
Are not the those who believe in a deity doing what they are evolved to do?
This strengthens me that it was that God created humans because he made us and only us with the capacity of spirituality. Primates have no spirituality or other qualities that humans possess. Because we were made in the image of God.

The model of evolution has no room for spiritual hunger yet it exists in billions of people. A belief in a deity, even ancient Aztecs or Austrialian Aborigines had spiritual gods. It is built in humans yet evolutionists will fight you against having something that if they are right evolution gave us. Very ironic and conflicting.

Shell Answer Man, but spirituality is still as strong as ever in humans you have no proof that it is going to become redundant.
Andrew, but you are arguing against the very thing you believe in.

David m and ollyoctopus that is the kind of answer I was expecting. Doesn't even answer the question but tries to belittle the dare of questioning evolution.
Evolution if it is true had a big hand in giving us spirituality. Our minds and thinking, personalities are shaped by evolution. We are after all animals are we not and all animals do what evolution gives them.
Funny how evolutionists try to make man above the animal kingdom they tell you some how our brain capacity evolved that we do not see ourselves as the same as animals but above them.
Ironically, God set us above animals too he gave us qualities animals cannot have. God gave us spirituality, we can communicate to him with full understanding and use of complex language. God gave us the superiority over the animals kingdom to rule over it.
If I evolved then spirituality is something I just do just as a dog barks and a bird flies I should worship. But even you have agreed it doesn't fit in with evolution. Why is that?

timeponder, best evolution answer I got though I disagree about your opinion why sprituality evolved. At least it contained deep intelligent thought and I respect that.

If religion is false, that doesn't make God false. Ask yourself something, who created religion, God or Man?

Great double-bind there. And you even managed a straw man or two there too. Pity it is fallacious. Just about everything you have said is false.
Primates have no spirituality? Have they told you? Do you even know any primates??? There is no way you can say that primates or any other animals possess no spirituality.
No other qualities that humans possess??? Chimpanzees share 98.4% the same DNA as humans. If you care to check out the link I have provided you will find a whole lot more that we share.
As for your fallacious main argument, I am not discounting the fact that evolution may have given humans spirituality. It worked to explain many things when our brain capacities were much smaller and did not have the ability to critically analyze things. Evolution also gave us curiosity and the desire to understand things. Which is why religion worked so well historically. A neat answer when there was no viable alternative. Now, our brain capacities are much larger and we understand a whole lot more about our earth, our solar system and the whole galaxy. Of course there are still areas where we understand very little. But just because science only understands little of a certain subject, does not mean we should discount it and replace it with a book which understands nothing of it. In order to prove my point I will ask you to do something which you are probably not expecting. Read the bible. It contains SO many passages which are now provably false. In many verses it clearly states that it is god's word and it should be taken literally. Taken literally, this book would cause us problems of biblical proprtions.

I'm not sure if you really want an answer but.... evolution does not make perfect organisms - most traits have advantages and disadvantages, eg. wings are great but birds had to give up two of their limbs for them. Likewise, having hugely intelligent, social, emotional, curious brains is great but that doesn't mean that everything that comes with them is beneficial.
We are born with spirituality in the sense that our social brains tend to anthropomorphise and are full of wonder about the world and a desire to connect. These traits are beneficial on their own (understanding others, drive to understand our environment, connecting to our social group). We are not born with religion.
As such is it possible to argue that religion is a parasitic idea that evolves itself across the generations - the survival of the fittest ideas (meaning survival of the ideas best able to survive by pushing our buttons). But it could also be argued that religion provided a survival advantage to the social group.
I don't know, and I don't know if religion is a positive or negative thing for us on balance. But just because something is a product of evolution, doesn't necessarily make it beneficial.

You do raise a fascinating point - health studies do show religious people often are healthier. I guess when you believe some God will take care of all your problems, it does tend to make for a less stressful existence. Obviously, that trait would be considered a feather in the cap of religious people, as far as natural selection goes.
However, with that said, religious beliefs aren't entirely a positive thing for all people. They've been used to justify plenty of violence, for starters. Furthermore, they seem to be used way too often as an excuse for faulty reasoning. (There are some religious people who do not have even a basic grasp of scientific concepts. It's almost painful listening to them try and debunk some of these ideas, since you can tell right from the get-go they don't even understand what they are debunking.)
Therein lies the irony - even if evolution does give religious belief a pat on the back in a matter of speaking, many religious people don't believe in evolution to accept that pat on the back.

Using your model then evolution came up with psychiatric disorders and in those you find a lot of religious fervour!!!
You confuse religion and science. You seek to impose a narrow religious viewpoint on the rest of the world.
That is the true meaning of intolerance and Christianity is the only religion where such intolerance is practiced!!!
Science has proved man was on this planet 70,000 years ago and worshipping a snake. Where was Christianity then?
Stop being intolerant of science and other peoples views and beliefs. It just makes all the non Christians convinced that you are truly afraid of evolution and science because you lack faith and the ability to handle it!

Wow, I never thought about religion in that way. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I think however (which is besides the point)that animals have spirituality too, they are in Paradise because they have no free will. Free will is what causes humans pain and suffering.

right. Some things evolution produces have lasting value. Other things have temporary value. Binocular vision has lasting value; religion, the appendix and tonsils do not.
