You can make a Mr. Hankey ornament by going #2, and then using fishing wire and a hook to hang it from the tree.
My Mr. Hankey ornaments get alot of laughs and plenty of discussion from the family over our Christmas dinner. You can also add a twist to it if you want, I got this idea recently and never put it to use:
1. Find an old Mp3 player with external speaker that you don't want anymore.
2. Download some soundbites from http://www.southparkstudios.com of Mr. Hankey and place those clips onto the mp3 player.
3. Swallow that mp3 player and wait about 1 day.
4. Pass that mp3 player, so it is embedded within the "ornament" that you will be making.
This way, your new "Mr. Hankey" ornament will be able to play songs and say things just like the real Mr. Hankey! Great idea huh!! Well, have a Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year! Best wishes!

ADVENT CALANDER IDEA: I did this one year with my kids and we all loved it: Your son can help you make a Christmas tree out of green construction paper that you can hang on the wall or tape to a door, for example. The tree would be as big as you can make it...maybe 3 feet wide and 3 feet tall. Just cut irregular shaped branches and layer them to form a tree. Then, he can help you cut out different color circles using construction paper which will be the Christmas bulbs on the tree. Tape these on the tree. Then, without your son's help, get a bunch of your old duplicate family pictures (we all have lots of those) and cut them into circles slightly smaller than the ones on the tree. Tape the pictures on each circle. Then, tape another circle on top of the picture. Write a decorative 1 through 24 on the circles. If you started Dec. 1st, you would need 48 circles. Each morning, your son can remove the corresponding top circle to the date. He'll be delighted when each picture is revealed! It's really fun! And, it's not too late!

Depending on his age you could string popcorn and/or cranberries on string. These can be used to decorate the tree or around the house.
You could go to the craft store and pick up different shaped wood "beads" which can be painted and strung on twine to make a colorful garland for the tree. The holes are large enough so that a needle won't be needed so it's age appropriate for younger kids.
As a kid, I remember making an "Advent Calendar" out of a chain of altnernating rings of red and green construction paper. Each day we got to remove a link of the chain until on Christmas Eve there was just one left. You could have him decorate each "day" with different pictures.
Good luck!

there is the classic popcorn on a string....
or you could be more adventurous and make some glittery snow storms with glass vases water and glitter, put the water and glitter in a glass ball, then make the base from plaster of paris and varnish it, then glue a santa onto it, turn it upside down and glue it onto the vase.
or you could make dough dollys, salt flour and water, make a dough, then use the dough to make a santa or a smowman, then bake it slow for a long time and varnish in the appropriate colour.
you could try a paper masche (sp) snowman. blow up two balloons to different sizex and sellotape them together. then cover them in newspaper and PVA, let them dry and then pop the ballon, you can paint them and decorate them with glitter.
im off to do something similar now....
have fun

Your son would love to make little crafts with you for Christmas. You can use them to decorate, or for gifts. Use old toilet paper rolls to make Santas, penguins, elves and reindeer. You can cut one in half and make 2 elves! All you need is:
- as many toilet paper rolls as you want
- scissors
- a set of markers/pencil crayons
- a glue stick/bottle of glue
- some black white paper
Using these you can make cute little figures and accessories for them! Curl paper into a round-bottomed pyramid for elf and Santa hats. There are so many possibilities!

We used to string popcorn. Another easy one is to dry out cranberries and oranges (slice thin) and sting them in an alternating pattern. Also, we would cut out strips of construction paper, tape them at the ends so that they formed a circle, and then intertwine another to form a chain.
My mom also used to take Christmas cards, or other greeting cards we had received, and cut them out (the pictures) and glue them to construction paper backs and then punch a hole in the top and string them to hang on the tree!
Have fun!

You can make paper chains!!!!
Take lots of sheets of red, green, and white construction paper and cut them into strips about an half an inch wide. Bend them into a circle and them staple them together, and you'll have a homemade paper chain!!!

How about the ol' strips of colored construction paper pasted together to make chains of garland? Or stringing popcorn (depending on his age) on a threaded needle? Color little pictures, punch a hole in them and string ribbon through them to hang? How wonderful to be making memories with your son! He'll love it!

Make cut out snow flakes from paper.
Just fold the paper in some unique shapes and then just cut out some pieces of the paper to make the snowflakes.
You can also make popcicle stick animals to go on the x-mas tree.

Buy hanging bulbs of different colors, then use a crafts website to find ways to decorate, sprinkle and glue, or dye the bulb.
