You and your friend are very, very intelligent people! The "Naval" in the "Naval Academy" does not mean "belly button." It is the adjectival form of the noun "Navy." Keep up the good work!

Naval does mean bellybutton, but when it is used in a name like US Naval Academy, it refers to the ocean. The Naval Academy trains officers for the US Navy.

It is the United States Naval (NAVY) Academy, where they prepare soldiers to be commissioned as ensigns in the Navy . Upon graduation, the newly commissioned ensign also receives a bachelor of science degree, which is as highly regarded as any degree from an Ivy league college.

I agree with the "Bellybutton Academy" guy. If we called Annapolis that, then all the other countries navies would laugh at us.

The word for bellybutton is "navEl" not "navAl" -- but I'm sure you learned that in school.
