A mp3 player is a player that plays mp3 files. Mp3 files(songs) are the songs that are copied from a regular cd to make it smaller in size ,so u can store more songs on a single cd.
a Mp3 player contains a memory card and u can directly copy song to the mp3 player from ur computer. no of songs Depends on the memory size u have. So u do not require the cds any more.
But if u r looking for a home theater that is mp3 compatible, means that this player can play cds containing mp3 files recorded from the computer.

An MP3 player is a device that can store and play music files usually ripped onto a computer from a CD or purchased from an on line music store in the MP3 format and then transferred to the music player via a cable connected to your computer using software usually dedicated to the individual player. The MP3 format compresses the music file so that it is small and manageable while still maintaining the integrity of the music allowing 100's of songs to be stored on a single MP3 player.

MP3 stands for Media Player 3. It plays same songs as you can play on normal CD Player but this MP3 format make a file quite short so you can have more songs on one CD as compare to the normal songs. If you are aware of RAR files its almost same way to squeez the audio files and If its a Video Files its known as MP4.
