Gatherers. Not until after the flood was meat to be used as food.
Genesis 9:3,4 "Â Every moving animal that is alive may serve as food for YOU. As in the case of green vegetation, I do give it all to YOU. Â Only flesh with its soul—its blood—YOU must not eat."
When God allowed Noah and his family to eat meat after the deluge, he gave the instruction to not eat the blood of the animal. This was the first time God gave the instruction to abstain from blood because this was the first time humans ate meat.
Deuteronomy 23-25 explains more about the blood command.

They never really existed, but according to the story you're half right. There is no mention of them eating meat, however in the story they are permitted every herb and fruit as food... I would say if the story had any historical value, they would have been merely gatherers.
