I went to a class last night where we meditated by focusing on our breath, breathing in and breathing out. Breathing out let out all the anger with black smoke, breathing in let in white light.

Afterwards I asked if the meeting I attended was considered a "service" or a meeting or what. I was told it was generally considered a "class."

I expressed my own feelings about that term and how I associated it with getting tested and being graded. That was not the case with what was being taught there - the inner world of ourselves is as pertinent to our happiness as the objective world... if not more.

The teaching of the BUDDHA ,we Buddhist called it Dhamma.

The Buddha's Teaching is based on the Four Noble Truths. To realise these Truths is to realise and penetrate into the true nature of existence, including the full knowledge of oneself.

When we recognise that all phenomenal things are transitory, are subject to suffering and are void of essential reality,we will be convinced that true and enduring happiness cannot be found in material possessions and worldly achievement, that true happiness must be sought only through mental purity and the cultivation of wisdom.

What is dharma?

I understand it as the poetry of my life. When my mind is simple, I see the people/places/things as a living colorful story that all makes some sort of sense. This makes me realize that the whole world moves and operates in the same cohesive way. My whole life is an energy that has all these forms all from the same source. Dharma is the showing of it through time.

As far as the comments about your defining the "class" you attended... What difference does it matter what each person calls the "class"? None.

PS-simple zazen is better than imaging your breathing out black smoke and breathing in white light. Just let your mind be still and ordinary.

To me a class is simply a gathering place for one (the teacher) to share information for the intent of increased awareness of others. Some classes (school) are graded...others are simply places to absorb and gather information. By the way...isn't Karma the lesson presented that you are to learn and the Dharma is what you do when that lesson is presented on you path? Thought that's what I heard 'out there' while attending a mini-lecture (class) one evening.

My understanding of dharma is; it is ones mission in life, the purpose for which you were born. A disciple is a student. The testing and grading occurs in your personal life as you grow aware and learn to solve your problems. You are right about the inner and outer worlds, a disciple learns to operate effectively in both.
