I was in the army from a year and a half before the war started until two years after it ended. In all that time I never heard the term "mass army", so I don't believe it was a general term.

Hmmmm :-? Not a term I'm familiar with... though it SOUNDS like it might be Soviet in origin...

They named their formations Shock armies and Guard armies... I know they often depended on sheer MASS of forces... http://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil/documents/redopart.htm
