I do lots of squats at the gym that help, as well as using the elliptical machine that has settings specifically designed for working the gluteal areas.
When I'm at home, I do a couple of exercises that help. First, lie on my back with my knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Feet should be about a foot and a half apart. Lift pelvis off floor and squeeze buttocks together. Hold for 5 seconds, then release and lower pelvis back to floor. I find if I do 100 of these a day it really helps firm up my butt.
The second is an exercise I call "doggy lifts." On hands and knees, lift one leg up to the side. Hold for 5 seconds and then lower. Make sure to alternate sides. I try to do about 50 of those per day.

Squats, Pilates, wall sits - leaning against a wall and dropping down until your thighs are parallel with the floor, then hold as long as you can. Also, lunges.
Sports-wise, if you like sports, I highly recommend tennis. I'm a massage therapist who used to work at a year-round resort and one thing I started to notice. Women - and men too - who play a lot of tennis, regardless of their age, they almost always have really nice, firm buttocks. It's due to the constant running and lunging that is part of the game.

Two. Squats. You can do this in your kitchen. Stand at the counter, hands on the counter for balance. Squat down slowly, go up slowly, do 10 times. Do every day.
Next, get a kitchen floor pail, put some water in it to make it heavy.
Squat down, bent over a bit, with elbows bent a bit, and HOLD the pail fo water for about a minute. Tightens up the butt muscles, and everything else, too.

The only route 2 permanent weight loss is a combination of exercise and diet.
Very low calorie diets or fad diets tent 2 lead 2 d yo-yo phenomenon, in which people lose weight, then quickly regain all they've lost and more. The additional weight is often even harder 2 shed.

-squats
-biking
-roller blading
-lay on your back and lift pelvis while squeezing butt. repeat 15-20 tiems.
-get on hands and knees, lift one leg out to the side and lower, its like a dog peeing.
-get on your hands and knees and straighten one leg at a time pushing to the back, the back of your knee facing the ceiling. Add ankle weights to make it more challenging.
-lay on your stomach and lift your legs and upper body about six inches off the ground. Hold for 30 sec. Do ten reps.
-squeeze your cheeks for about a min. and relax, repeat 10-15 times.
