That's because people are misinformed and don't read the Bible.

I believe that Christians hold a belief in hell and a Satan figure because our religion is one of consequences. There has to be a 'payback' for not following the rules.
I personally do not believe in hell, or Satan. Both ideas seem to be in conflict with what God represents. If you accept that there is a power greater than all, then how could there be an evil power that threatens? It would be no problem for God to vanquish a threat. No, I believe that 'bad things' happen simply because we exist in a world of free will. Man is not bound by good. We have choices. And natural disasters are just that, natural. God does not cause hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, etc to occur in order to 'teach' us. We seem to be afraid to accept the capriciousness of the natural world.

There is another possibility. Maybe they have read that reference, and the rest of that book, and the bible, and came to a different conclusion. Perhaps you are wrong in your interpretation. People believe in hellfire, because there is good reason to. If you don't, thats fine, but it is also fine that some have found a very good reason to believe so.

Emma you seem to be looking to find the truth. There is a book called the course in miracles that explains this and many of the other things that you have been asking about.
It is well worth the time spent reading it. I have worn out one hardcover copy and am working on wearing out a second.
It seems to have been made for someone who thinks like you do.
Love and blessings Don

Because essentially we die once, then judgment. Those who are dead are not aware of anything. But on Judgment Day, they will be resurrected just like everyone else and face judgment.
The grave is not the end of the road...for anyone. That fate remains to be seen.

The God I know and love isn't willing to torture hir own creation for all eternity. Hell (the kingdom of eternal torment) is an invented, medieval concept to keep people obedient.
