If so, why? Is it the fear of the unknown? Is it the fear of hell? I think it's a terrible thing how religion has turned such a natural part of life as something to be so truly and most horribly feared. Whether you believe in hell or not is up to you, but personally I think the concept is utterly inane and should be disregarded as pure nonsense.

Please try and just think of death in the same way that you think of how you fall asleep every night. There is nothing to fear, as you won't be conscious to fear it.

I am less afraid of the idea of dying now that I am approaching 50 than I was at, say 20 or 30. But I still have a very real fear of how I might die. If there was a guarantee that you would simply 'fall asleep', then I believe people would be more accepting of death. But that is not the reality. Death can be quick, or slow with great pain and suffereing. That is what I fear.

what are you, nuts?! Of course I fear death. Everybody fears death. Death could entail pain and it certainly means an end to everything I call 'pleasure' today. Forget fear of the unknown that follows death.

Okay, Mr Analogy, if you knew that you wouldn't wake up after the next time you fell asleep, how long do you imagine you'd stay awake? would you go to bed at your normal time? Go to bed early to get that next leg of the journey started? Didn't think so.

To fear death is instinctive. It is only natural to want to preserve yourself. I would say that I am afraid of the act of dying. I really don't want to know what it feels like to have my heart stop, bleed to death or suffer some other type of fatal injury. Doesn't seem like it would be much fun. But I am not afraid of the consequences of death. Death is life's inevitable and natural conclusion. I don't believe in the afterlife and I can't feel or be conscious of anything once I'm dead. It's just the end. Accept it. I suppose I would be more afraid of the consequences of death if I had children to care for.

Not scared as such, no. I just hope it isn't too dramatic - unless great fun too.

I also rather hope to do a little more and experience a few more things (and people ;) ) before I have to pop my clogs.

I agree that death is not something to be feared - but equally, I would rather not experience it for a while as I have a spot more living to do first.

I don't believe in hell but I am scared of dying. And it is exactly that loss of consciousness you mentioned that I think I fear the most.

The thought that I will just cease to be is so weird. It just doesn't matter that some people (i.e., family and friends) will remember me... I wouldn't be around to appreciate it. It's just nothingness. And the world will just go on... not to mention the universe. For me, death highlights so succinctly how insignificant I am.

My ego just can't see that as anything but scary.

(I think this is a tendency shared by a few others in our ever more individualistic society.)

well you dont know how right you are, infact thats exactly what the bible teaches eclesiastes 9:5 says that the dead are not conscious of nothing at all.....if you are not conscious you do not feel pain.

When lazarus died jesus said that he was going to awaken him from sleep, so he likened death to sleep. But that doesnt mean thats the end as God has promised to resurrect millions from the grave to live on a paradise earth.

People fear death because of the false teachings like hellfire etc...the bible does not teach this at all!!

It is not death I fear, it is the thought that I might be in great pain before I reach the blessing of death that gives me pause. I do not fear Hell as I am confident I will not have to see it.

Just answering the first sentence of your question; I am anxious about the PROCESS of dying, and how that will end up occurring for me; illness, accident, murder, there are so many possibilities. But I don't dwell on it, as it only serves to dampen the experience of being alive, and cannot be avoided.

I am NOT anxious or scared of BEING dead. MY belief is that I will go to heaven...YOU don't have to believe it...YOU don't have to promote that...but I also think it's disengenuous of you to mock and insult those who do. You say you respect the right of others to believe as they wish, but you insult them in the same sentence with words like "inane" and "should be disregarded as pure nonsense."

It's interesting how those who promote "free thinking and personal freedom" are many times the most judgmental and hateful people out there.

God bless and I will pray for you and those like you in this world, of which there are sadly far too many.

I think it's the fear of the unknown that scares me. I love life and don't want it to end. It ll seems so pointless. Why spend a lifetime building relationships and careers to have it all end one day. I have no fear of hell, and don't believe in heaven. But i do believe that everyone needs something to believe in. Regardless of faith.

loss of the familiar is the fear, assuming that you have some thoughts after. however we also fear an awful death. Shark attack or plane crash comes to mind.
