That happened to me once on an old stereo, (not a car). I tried to figure it out but couldn't. The weird thing was CD''s were fine as well as the radio but the tape wouldn't play properly. I think it might have been something to do with constant interference on tapes. I would suggest taking it to a shop that deals with car stereos etc.

Most often just cleaning the heads with a proprietary cleaning tape solves the problem. If not new head is probably required. Unless its an expensive tape unit replacing the player may be the best option Repairs by a professional can cost more than buying new.

If their is sound coming out of all the speakers when the radio is on but only one speaker when using the tape deck, this could mean the heads on the tape deck are dirty or worn out.Try cleaning them,if that don't work new deck time...good luck

It sounds like the tape players playback head is partially dead.Take your car to a car stereo shop for a confirmation or their idea.

I agree that the head is goosed in the headunit. Cheaper and easier to just replace the whole unit with a more modern CD player.

Try a tape head cleaning cassette first. If that doesn't work the tape player is faulty.

check the wires running from the stereo to that speaker. There may be a short or something may be disconnected.
