Here's why... It is a CULT. Despite what a few fanatical members may say, it IS a cult. The “church” harasses & bullies anyone who they deem an "enemy" (basically anyone who has anything negative to say about the "church"). They will RUIN YOUR LIFE if you speak out against them long enough.
The founder is L. Ron Hubbard, the science FICTION writer who once told a friend that the best way to make lots of money is to start your own religion. Though being a very outspoken critic of psychiatric drugs, it was discovered upon Hubbards death that the anti-anxiety drug hydroxyzine (Vistaril) was present in his body, which several of his assistants would later attest was only one of many psychiatric & pain medications Hubbard ingested over the years. (visit this link to read about the uses of hydoxyzine: http://www.drugs.com/mtm/v/vistaril.html )
Scientologists believe the evil alien ruler Xenu killed a lot of aliens (Thetans) from around the universe by bringing them to earth & blowing them up inside volcanoes. They believe the souls of these aliens (these souls are "Body Thetans") have attached themselves to us & cause many of our mental & physical ills. Members who know about Xenu will attempt to deny it or pretend like it doesn’t matter. They are required to sign a contract binding them to silence on the matter. Lower level members don’t know about Xenu & accordingly deny everything because they honestly don’t know.
To rid ourselves of "Body Thetans" & also “engrams” (past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind) so that we can become “clear”, we have to go through "auditing" with a member of the “church” who uses an "e-meter" to measure our “reactive mind”...... & we have to pay lots & lots of money for “auditing” (purchased in 12.5-hour blocks, costing anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 & $9,000 for advanced sessions) & to take courses on Scientology to advance to higher “levels” in the “church”. The “church” has also taken a very hostile stance towards psychiatry & psychiatric drugs irrespective of the fact that some people require medication to remain adequately functional in everyday life. They deny the reality of chemical imbalance & profound mental disturbance & accordingly do NOTHING to effectively stabilize the dangerously unstable. The “church” has been known to withhold prescription pharmaceuticals from member (with deadly results).
Scientology is undeniably a cult. For more information on what a cult is & what their damaging effects are, please visit the link provided at the bottom of the sources. Just know that Scientology DOES qualify by meeting these 5 criteria:
(1) It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate & retain its members. (2) It forms an elitist totalitarian society. (3) Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable & has charisma. (4) It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds & recruit people. (5) Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.

There is a reason for the apparent "bad rap" , but the effect it has on the growth and popularity of Scientology today is fading fast.
The truth is that back in the late 1940's L.Ron Hubbard was recovering from his WW II injuries as Commander of a convoy Atlantic escort vessel in Oak Knoll Naval Hospital. While there he conducted some experiments and began to apply his theories to the field of the mind with some of his fellow patients.
This was part of the research that resulted in his book
" Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health."
As a result of doing this he uncovered "mind control" experiements that the US government were conducting in the very same hospital with some of the patients. He was able to reverse the effects of these experiments. He would not co operate with or assit the US government , despite their attempts to make him, and discharged himself from the US Navy.
As a result he became a government target. Not only did he know what they were doing he also had developed technology that could undo their efforts to control people
He was also continuing with his research independantly without the government owning or controlling it. When he finally released Dianetics in 1950 to the general public and Dianetics
was in wide use and application in the US he basically became
the CIA's biggest headache ever!
The battle has been long and hard with covert and overt attack in every country as false information about Scientology and Dianetics was spread through government files internationally via INTERPOL (now disbanded).
Anyway, with the Freedom of Information Act's now law in most countries, thanks to the work of many Scientologists and their allies, government files on people and organizations can no longer remain secret. And the lies and false information can be cleaned up and removed. This has mostly been done.
What you run into now via bogus websites, media, TV cartoons,
etc is just residual. The real fight to attack and stop this religion and undermine religious freedom has been fought and won by Scientologists and Scientology.
No need to thank us for protecting your Human Rights and Freedoms as we continue to do this for everyone, but I invite you to help us by finding out more about what they actually are so your right to a future is assured.
You don't have to be a Scientologist to do something about your freedoms.

Because it's a secretive wacko cult. If it's a religion, why can't anyone study their scriptures? Any sufficiently devoted Christian, Muslim, Jew etc would jump at the chance to give me the Bible/Quran/Torah for free, since they want to spread the message. If I make the OT documents available, I'll be sued by the Church of Scientology.

When you talk to somebody from the scientology belief and others, and you are a person who feels peoples emotions and watch their body language, you get a real spoocky feel from them.
Its like talking to a robot who is trying to act like a feeling, thinking human being.
I once talked to somebody on the street with my lilttle girl next to me, she was about 8. After we walked on she said thats what she does not like about religions. I did not understand what she meant and asked her.
She said when you talk some people about their religion its like they are not really here with you like their minds are always somewhere else and thats in all religions.
You know the sayinng truth come from the childs mouth.
I quess it comes down to two things. 1 we call terrorists fanatics and 2 we call fanatics terroists. Maybe that should tell us something and them too.

Having worked a pretty good deal in this area and having read/interviewed personally many people who have left scientology...it claims to offer answers without answering them, and lures people along with the hope of promotion. Instead, it sucks away money, tells people to deny medical treatment (and, in at least one documented case, has locked a member away in order to keep them from getting medical treatment) and convinces parents to sign their children over to the religion in order to gain more for themselves.

It's a threat to society in a coastal city.
I live right near Downtown clearwater, Florida and there are scientologists everywhere. Doesn't really reflect the image of a coastal town. It's just kinda funny seeing people dressed in slacks and dress shirts to where people are in speedos and bathing suits 3 miles west. This is a coastal town and I feel it should be more of a coastal atmosphere.

It's a man-made religion? Well all religions are man-made religions. But this one comes from a second rate science fiction writer - maybe if it had been Asimov or Heinlein who actually had insight it would make sense - who made up his own fake biography, threw some psychobabble in with people's fascination with UFOs and then didn't follow his own "religion".

Because it is a Cult! All it is doing is making some people really rich and the ones who join it are really dumb to support it. But I guess they think if they belong to it they are doing a good thing. Some of them need to belong to something. They know something is missing in their lives but that is not what they need.

same reason we feel Christianity or any other cult is bad. It offer a truckful of burdensome, unprovable, unQUESTIONable belief and actual life improvement on par with a placebo.
