The 25th December is mid-winters day not a Christian festival. It is a collection of ancient pagan and European rites and traditions.
The true Christian day is 6 January.
When the Christian church set up in Europe it built churches on all the pagan sites in the hope that the people, being used to worship at that place, would continue to do so and turn Christian more easily. In the same way they moved their celebration to the 25th to try and usurp the ancient rites and traditions.
I call it very unchristian. But there are many true Christians who celebrate on the 6th of January and shun the 25th!
The atheists and many people of non Christian religions do join together and enjoy Christmas in a spirit off friendship and unity. Sharing with others the joy of the celebrations.
It is only Christians who try to hog it to themselves!!!

Most "Christmas" parties have nothing to do with religion. We do have Solstice parties where religion IS usually some of the focus, but not in the way delusional religionists would approve of.
You have reached the point where you have achieved "doubt", which is a good thing. Atheism is not something that is stumbled on in the dark or in a blinding flash. To achieve rationality is a developmental process that has to overcome the mindless programming that has been shoved at you since childhood. I'm amazed that I started asking the right questions when I was eleven and even more amazed that I was able to take the "because" answers of religion with a jaundiced eye at such a young age. Still it took three more years before I called myself an agnostic and three hard years more before being to call myself an Atheist. Happy about it? Sometimes I envy delusionalists who think they are going to end up in some cosmic Disneyland when they die, instead of the void on non-existence, but in the end, I'm happy I do not live in the delusional haze that seems to keep them anesthetized to reality.

Party down, man! It's the holidays for atheists too. Remember the reason for the festival at this time of year is to celebrate the middle of winter, the shortest day, the fact that we've seen the low point of the winter light and it's all just going to get better from here on out.
There's nothing wrong with celebrating something as ordinary and predictable as another sunrise.

To one of the posts: Christmas isn't a Pagan Holiday? Who came up with such nonsense? If that's what you think maybe you should do a study of it's origin.
God does exist and I'm guessing you've seen or heard him in your life over and over again. The very fact that you still fear God says to me He is working in your life.
Are you going to see the new movie out, The Nativity Story? I have a feeling if you were to see it things would get set straight in your heart again. That stirring you would feel is God. You would walk away with a renewed sense of God in your life and be at peace with Him again.
Hope this helps

I spend my christmas like most christian families but without the church visits or singing of religious carols.
I treat it as a time of being with my family rather than celebrating the birth of a fictional character who wasn't even born then anyway

the media have changed the actual meaning of christmas entirely. as an atheist i'd rather it just went away all together, as it embodies two of the worlds most destructive entities, organised religion and consumerism.
