My twin brother is heavily addicted to heroin and cannot stay clean. It has escalated to the point where he is now stealing money. He was NEVER a bad kid. Literally everyone has given up on him, even family. I am the only one who still cares, what can I do for him?

you can help him by being supportive and telling him you love him and would like him to go into rehab. My brother too was addicted to heroin and he tried to get off it alone - started going to methadon clinics - because when coming off heroin the withdrawal effects are horrible. He did go into a 30 day rehab and has been clean since - but it is a daily battle for him. Your brother has to want to stay clean . With your love and support he may come to a realization that his life is worth saving - but he has to make the final decision. Good Luck.

OMG! I have an identical twin sister and identical twin brothers and I have to say, never give up on your true soul mate. Have you ever tried to plead with him to get into rehab or hospitalization? If not, please try. If that doesn't work. Stop enabling him to have any ways or means to steal from you or your family. Unfortunately, his life path is his and his only. Besides him having to learn the hard way and maybe even die, all you can do is either take him hostage and lock him in a soundproof room for however long it takes for him to get over the physical/mental hold it has on him, or you can do a geographical change where he will not know where to get it. Don't listen to all the NA/AA'ers. Recidivism is a comomon ocurrence in that program. So, I know you know that all you can do is gently push him into a mental hospital or move. I don't think NA/AA is effective. He needs medical and mental supervision. Have him committed if you can. Good luck. I know I would die for my twin sister and I would go through hospitalization with her and hold her hand the whole way. We love each other more than life itself and we will never, ever be apart. Thick and thin, my only soulmate is my identical twin. I would give my life in a second for her.

The thing is, when someone's addicted to heroin, you're not actually talking to the person, you're talking to the drug. The person isn't really there. It's kinda like being possessed in which you have to get the demon out in order to save the person whom it inhabits. Personally, I would treat this situation much the same as some kind of possession, so if the demon asks for money, you don't give money to the demon (because that makes it stronger). You can help try to speak to the person inside and get him to fight, you can help to support any attempts to get clean. But ultimately I have to say the person must fight the battle and win it themselves.

There is a great drug used to treat heroin and other opiate dependence called SUBOXONE. It is treatment you can get in a doctor's office, so you don't have to go to a methadone clinic everyday. It works completely in many people. When people take this drug that don't crave heroin or other opiates (painkillers), and if they do take them while using this drug they will not work. The drug blocks their effect. For more information go to:

www.suboxone.com and request info be mailed to you that you can give to him. There are many community programs that can help him get this prescription drug to help him.

Best of luck!

Katie this is what heroin does to people..they will kill for twenty dollars...you might have to tell on him to the police, to get him incarcerated and get off the drugs...I wouldn't tell you to do that, and I wouldn't advise you to let him know this..but sometimes, you need interventions, and this might be your only way to stop him...and tell the police that you love him and don't want him to overdose, and that he is a good person with a terrible addiction..you might even call the police, and ask them what they would advise you...Pray for him darling, and never give up on him...he needs you xxxxx

I know it sounds rotten, but if you keep helping your brother, then he will not be able to help himself.

He needs to find rock bottom, then if he wants to,he will start to help himself.

I was not a Heroin addict,But I was an Alcoholic,The basic rule applies for all addicts.

Addictions can sometimes result from a low blood sugar condition, with the drugs helping the body to find "sugar". If this is present in your brother, the way to find out is either get him to a doctor for fasting blood insulin tests and a 6 hour glucose tolerance test (you would have to ask the doctor how long he has to stay clean before the tests will give valid results).

If he does have low blood sugar, then diet and exercise will help. www.hufa.org has some info on low blood sugar and it causes and symptoms.

I would say, get him on a low blood sugar diet for 2 weeks at least before trying to get him to quit again. How to get him to do all this? Bribes, maybe?

I know how you feel. My dad is an alcoholic. Whatever you do, dont give up on him. He needs the support of someone. But you cant get him to quit for you, he's gotta do it for himself. He's not gonna quit until he's ready... Sometimes I think that Jail is the best place for them, because they can't get a hold of any of it... Its Sad to say that, and I hate to say it, but it's the honest to god truth... Good Luck....and Pray for Him Daily. It helps.
