Jesus is the "Son" of God in that He IS God, who choose to come to earth, take human form (throught birth by a woman) and die so that the sin debt may be paid. So, God, Himself, was experiencing what He could not in the Spirit form.

Jesus death was prophesized in the old testament, The old testament speaks about the salvation of man, and that salvation was purposed on Jesus christ.

The reasons behind why Jesus died are a combination of God's plan and man's foolish sin in killing an innocent man. The foremost reason is the love of God, Rom 8:5; 1 Jn 3:16. Man had a desperate need for redemption, Rom 3:10; Mt 20:28; Heb 2:9; 1 Ti 1:15. Ultimately, a need for the remission of sins, Rom 2:5; Heb 9:22; Lk 24:46; Acts 17:3; 1 Cor 15:3. Jesus was that "acceptable sacrifice" to God, Mt 20:28; Eph 5:2; 1 Th 5:10. It was God's plan that Jesus died "vicariously" or in place of those who deserved it. This vicarious pattern was illustrated directly through the Old Testament antitype of the scapegoat, Lev 16:21-22. It was God's plan that an exchange be made: "the just for the unjust", Jn 10:14-18; Mt 26:53; 1 Cor 5:21; Gal 1:3-4; ; 3:13; 2 Cor 5:14,21; 1 Pe 2:24; 3:18; Rom 5:7-8; Isa 53:8-9. Without His death, Jesus could not have "qualified" as a high priest "with his own blood": Heb 9:7-12. These were the primary reasons from God's view why Jesus died.

It appears that in God's overall plan, there was some kind of time table in place to determine when Christ would die. Jesus was clearly appointed by God to die from the Garden, even before creation: Gen 3:15; Isa 53:6,10; Ac 2:23; Eph 3:11; 1 Pe 1:19-20. It seems that when the Gentiles started taking interest in Jesus, it was a signal to Christ that His death was near and His mission was accomplished: Jn 12:20-23; Jn 4:34; 17:4; 19:28-30. Although the death of Christ was part of a predetermined plan, Jesus was clearly not forced into dying, but volunteered his life as a gift, Isa 53:12; Mt 26:53; Joh 2:19; 5:26; 10:17,18.

well, you could take out teh whole "if Jesus was the son of God" proposition in that question. It adds nothing and lets people question whether Jesus was God's son.

Why would God let his son be tortured and killed? Simple, it was to free you and me from the covenant that condemned us all to a life of sin and an eternity in hell for unrepented sin. So the story goes. You know it's just a story, right?

It is not different than, say, you have a daughter and she has a condition that needs surgery or she may die. You as a parent have to make the decision whether the surgery (which will hurt you emotionally having to watch her go through with the surgery) or not and suffer death.

The human family needed redemption from sin and death. The Father understood this and had purposed this in the very first prophecy that is recorded in the Scriptures.

"And I shall put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. He will bruise you in the head and you will bruise him in the heel.” Genesis 3:15

He, Jesus would give Satan a lethal bruise to the head, while he would only have a temporary bruise, as it were,in the heal.
Although he died, it was temporary because his Father resurrected him on the third day.

The agony that God himself felt because of his only begotten Son having to go through this ordeal is plain for all to see from the Scriptures such as here:

"From the sixth hour on a darkness fell over all the land, until the ninth hour. About the ninth hour Jesus called out with a loud voice, saying: “E´li, E´li, la´ma sa·bach·tha´ni?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” -Matthew 17:45-46

Yes, Almighty God had withdrawn his protection completely, so that His Son could be tested to the limit. But we realize that because of this we all have hope NOW.

No the challenged to God's Sovereignty, his right to rule, by Satan the Devil can be answered once and for all.

“Skin in behalf of skin, and everything that a man has he will give in behalf of his soul" -Job 2:4

Notice "Everything that a MAN has he will give...." Not just Job!!
We are all involved in this issue!

I hope this straightens out your thinking on this matter.
It is one of the reasons the Chistendom has failed in teaching the truth about God and His Son.

Best Regards

Here is the Islamic point of view for your "enlightenment". Please do not read ahead if you have no respect for others' beliefs.

Jesus was the second last prophet of God and is considered to be one of the most respectable of God's people. One of Jesus' jewish followers betrayed him and gave the information of his whereabout to the Romans. When the Roman soldiers went to arrest Jesus, God changed the face of the betrayer, made him a Jesus look alike and muted him. Romans crucified the condemned follower and the real Jesus was ascended to the heavens.

One day Jesus will return, defeat the children of Israel and their leader, the famous anti-christ, and rule the world for 40 years before his earthly death, like all other mortals.

The ideas of him being God's son and salvation from sin through Jesus's sacrifice were invented by a Roman king and the church 2 centuries later.

You may find it interesting that Jews, Christians and Muslims, all are waiting for Messiah. All believe that the Messiah will favour them and defeat the the others.

Anyways, the moral is that Jesus was neither the son of God nor was he crucified.

It was the belief of Gnostic Christians in early times that at that point in the Garden when Jesus met with those from heaven that He was given something like the ability to separate from His body during this time. I think the Muslims believe this as well.
As for me I just say I do not yet understand, and move on with those things I do understand. Sometimes in life there is a heavy price that has to be paid thus the statement it is a tough job but somebody has to do it and in that case a just God could not ask that the price be paid by other than Himself.

ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

God made a Law..."The soul the sins must surely die"
God Made The Penalty..."Death"
God Made The Remedy...1 - Temporary Blood Sacrifice
2 - Final Spilling of Innocent Blood,
Human Sacrifice.

"He's God and He made the Game and He made The Ten Rules".

You don't like that game? Don't wanna play ... there's always Buddhism whole different understanding of you, God and the universe.

Meditate to know...

Before Jesus came, in order for man to get to heaven, they had to live a righteous life without as much sin as possible and give sacrifices such as livestock that were born perfect (externally I assume) to make up for the sin man suffered. It got to the point the world was becoming so sinful man could no longer overcome it so God had to send an ultimate sacrifice that would not just cover one man but all men, (and women). That's why Jesus came in a human form so he could live and endure as a man and be tempted as man but still live a sinless life so to be sacrificed to save all that would accept him as their saviour. His purpose all along was to save us. He knew that and could have went against God at any time but loved God and us enough to go through with what He did.

If you had a son and your son offered to be tortured and killed so that many people could be saved from eternal damnation would you let it happen? What if after it happened you had the power to bring your son back to life and He would rule over the entire earth? Would you let it hapen then?

Revelation 1:12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me (Jesus), and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white like wool, as white as snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

It was the price or requirement to ransom fallen man from destruction.
1) Had to be a man.
2) Had to be sinless (spotless)

Jesus was the only person ever born of a woman that met the criteria after Adam, who blew it in the garden. He was willing to be a substitute for you so that you might live with God forever.
