My all time favorite is Nature's Miracle. Mop, wipe wherever the dog has marked. Keep applying, because it may take a while to get all of the smell out. You may not smell it, but your dog does, and that is why he keeps going in the same spots. Depending on the dogs size, there are also "belly bands" for medium/small dogs at wrap around the dogs belly over his "winkie" to deter and protect your floors and furniture.
A regular schedule of walking the dog or letting it outside will help train your dog. Constant praise when he/she is good will teach him/her what makes you happy. My trainer also said do not, punish yell etc., at the dog when he/she messes in the house. Be firm and angry at what he/she did. If you are going to yell or be angry, be angry at what they DID not the dog. Sounds crazy or silly, but I would throw down a paper towel and as I was cleaning up whatever, I would be very annoyed verbally at the mess. Dogs know what they did, and soon get the message that going outside, or where they should go makes their human happy. Going where they aren't supposed to go makes their human sad/angry whatever. They want to make you happy, and will learn from their mistakes. Treat them as mistakes. With lots of praise for being good, they will learn what makes and keeps you happy.
Nature's Miracle will work on anything including carpets. So iif other animals have "marked" an area, you also have to get that area clean, otherwise the cycle will start over again.

Good luck

Sorry, but your only real prevention is training. I suggest crate training. Type "Crate training your dog" into a Yahoo! search and do some research. It works on dogs of all ages.

Try urine gone. It removes the scent so that your dog isn't peeing in the same place. I don't know about preventing where he hasn't been already.
