Actually, it's good old Carbon Dioxide. World wide, that makes up well over 92% of industrial emissions. It's harmful insofar as it contributes to global warming by enhancing the greenhouse effect.

Burning hydrocarbons, like coal, oil, natural gas, give the heat needed for process. Hydrocarbons main components are carbon and hydrogen, of course. When you combine hydrocarbons with oxygen, the results are a release of heat, the combination of hydrogen and water, the combination of carbon and water, i.e. CH4 + 2O2 -> 1(CO2) + 2(H2O) ---1 unit carbondioxide and 2 units water vapor (plus some other minor ones like sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc)

The main gas is CO2 from the burning of something , but don't worry mother nature has already includes air recycling in her system it is photosynthesis and the plants do a very good job.
