It is different for all of us. For me it is just a "knowing", but it takes a while to recognize it for what it is. If you do not currently meditate daily, please give it a try. It will open you up and help you to understand the impressions that you receive.
Also, learn something new (astrology, Tarot, Reiki, or any other metaphysically related topic). This will also help to open you up. Study myths, legends, and symbolism---all will help you to clarify your impressions and interpret them.
Ultimately, there is no other consciousness, just one great consciousness that you are tapping into and becoming aware of. Think of it as your own personal library to peruse at any time. Go to the link below. Ellie Crystal is a great resource and her site is 100% totally FREE.

The experience is different for everyone. On one hand, you can have a psychic moment that feels like you are viewing a whole story like a movie. At other times, you just get what I call an "incoming memo." But, no matter how you experience it, I've found that it's best to follow whatever you are given no matter how silly or stupid it appears to be on the surface. Why?
You never really know why you are being given the information until you act on it. THEN it becomes apparent! Usually after having that "ah-ha" moment, you're very glad you acted on the information received!

I believe we are all psychic, but for the majority the gift or the belief has been long knocked out of them. Educated out is another way of looking at it. Many professional psychics have grown up in a psychic friendly environment. Perhaps a grand-parent or parent with the knowledge has helped bring the extra sense out in the open and encouraged its use. But there are as many practicing psychics who have not had the benefit of caring psychic guidance and who have still managed to develop and hone this natural extra sense.
To tap in to your Psychic Sense you can go to my free develop-psychic-ability page here: http://www.psychic-junkie.com/develop-psychic-ability.html
And the 'Am I Psychic?' page is here http://www.psychic-junkie.com/am-i-psychic.html
And some interesting psychic tests are here: http://www.psychic-junkie.com/psychic-test.html

when it is a psychic impression ... then i have feelings , thoughts and words that i know do not belong to me
it is mine yet not mine ... so the only way to make sense of it is to ask those with you
chances are someone will understand all you are feeling , hearing seeing etc
although control is very important because you cant go around feeling things that arent yours to feel , unless you are going to give that info to someone else ... i.e reading or helping others in some way

I've had "psychic impressions", but they've always been the kind that almost knock me out of my chair. Nothing subtle. They hit with an impact, out of the blue.

It is much like you describe. A consciousness that is not my own running through my mind. Also feelings that don't belong to me.

First and foremost, to me, Psychics are against God. God does not like psychics for whatever reason(s). But my question is, how can it be proven, and how do they help in murder investigations? THAT I would like to know.

No they can't because such "impressions" are imaginary.
All so called "psychics" are frauds. Plain and simple.
