Hi, what does el casco mean? According to my Collins Spanish Dictionary it means helmet but I came across it in a sentence describing a buildings location in a city center so the word helmet wouldn't really be relevant. Does it mean something else as well?

Casco in this context means the old center of the city or town.

It means a lot of things such as helmet, the outer part of a ship ( the one which is in contact with water ), the hoof of the horse, the main building center of the city or town.

It has more than one meaning
1 it can be helmet, you are right

2 we call CASCO to the main building for example in a ranch, or the downtown in a city

So, in the case you talk about, it's related to the the building in the most important part of a city.
Even several times u'll hear about CASCO VIEJO , and CASCO NUEVO.
It's about when they have been built

Normally it is the main area in the center of the city.
You find the casco viejo which is the oldest part of the city,
the casco nuevo or the new buildings and also
the casco histórico with old, historic buildings.

for example el casco histórico de una ciudad is the place of a city where there are all the old buildings(I mean historic building from centuries ago) and this casco histórico is usually in the centre of the cities.
