Its just the mark left by the Umbilical Cord when it drops off. So it has no real purpose now besides holding salt when you are laying down and eating!./

It has no purpose after we leave our mothes womb but that is where we were once attatched to our mothers for blood, food oxygen and waste removal...It was the point where the umbilical cord entered our embrionic bodies...Gone now is the actual physical cord but in some the psychlogical attachment to the mother and the womb is ever present.

In all actuality your belly button is pratically useless, it is actually scaring from when the ambilical cord is cut ( the life line from mother to child). It is dead tissue, humans don't need it.
